Guest guest
this morning after getting up and before breakfast the sugar was 108. took my 15 units of insulin like normal. ate a normal breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 bacon and toast, with black coffee. took the sugar 2 hours later and it was 72. checked 3 times to make sure and it wasn't any more then 7 points higher and between. I did ride my no were bike about an hour after I ate. this isn't any different then I do any other day. I always row the pen back and forth about one minute to make sure it is good and mixed up. my q is, even though the box of five pens are the same, is it possible that some may not be exactly the 70 30 mix? my sugar never drops more then ten points doing the same as I done this morning. nothing different to speak of. I have had this very same thing happen 3 times now in ten weeks using the flex pens. a sudden drop of 30 instead of the normal ten points. I finally got me some six ounce cans of orange juice to have in case of lower sugar and to carry with me as well in my man purse that I do carry. I haven't drank one yet, even though when the sugar was in the low 70's I may should have. ate some strawberries and yogurt and it came up enough that the shakes went away. do any of you know for sure how many points a six ounce can of orange juice will raise your sugar? I realize we all are different, but just an idea will work to go by even though mine may be a different result. I will let the saw bones know when I go in 3 weeks from now about this and see what if anything he may know about it. that low sugar may work for some, but it certainly makes me feel like falling on my head. causes my legs to shake and feel like they are going to just fold up and go down. of course for many years my body was use to numbers between 350 and 450 most of the time. so I guess numbers always around and under 100 is lots strange for even my big old pig butt!!! Guest guest
Just losing weight may make it necessary that you decrease the amount of insulin you are taking. See how it goes for the next week or so. If you keep having lows you should call your doc before you have to see him and let him know. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2012 11:04 AM To: blind diabetics Subject: got a flex pen q please. this morning after getting up and before breakfast the sugar was 108. took my 15 units of insulin like normal. ate a normal breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 bacon and toast, with black coffee. took the sugar 2 hours later and it was 72. checked 3 times to make sure and it wasn't any more then 7 points higher and between. Guest guest
Did you eat your breakfast and take your insulin earlier than usual? What I'm getting at is, the time span between your last insulin injection, which would have been your evening one, was shorter and might have caused an overlap of your long acting insulin. While the long acting isn't supposed to have much of an effect on your food, it might have had a little effect, and as Pat suggested, in combination with your weight loss, caused this unexpected drop. I'd be inclined to think, like Pat, your weight loss is the most likely culprit however. An added benefit to losing weight! That is, reducing your insulin dose. Guest guest
actually my doctor thinks I'm still using 17 units twice a day. I lowered it my self about a month ago for 2 reasons. one my sugar was going low and by only using 30 a day the pen will last exactly ten days. 300 in each pen. I don't suppose I should be so tight, but it made grate sense to me and it is working out fine. 5 pens may only cost $90 out of my pocket, but if I can save 2 pens every six weeks by doing it this way, then I think the saw bones might agree if my numbers were good and they have been. I suppose I should fax him and let him know, but I did make a note of this fact in my records that he wishes to see when I go in the eighth of June. then he will notice and I will explain then. don't suppose I should play the part of my own doctor, but I know what my sugars are better then he does right now. I really don't think he or his nurses figured a fat boy like me was going to do so well in such a short time. they even said they would see me in one month and raise my dose to match my food in take. not only did they tell me to not come in after one month, but he has lowered the dose twice and I lowered it again even lower. I figured this was the problem and I do keep a close eye on it. the strips are free, so I take my sugar as much as I need to a day so I will know where it is and not guess. of course when I get the shakes and rubber legged it is a pretty good chance the sugar is low. got a flex pen q please. this morning after getting up and before breakfast the sugar was 108. took my 15 units of insulin like normal. ate a normal breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 bacon and toast, with black coffee. took the sugar 2 hours later and it was 72. checked 3 times to make sure and it wasn't any more then 7 points higher and between. Guest guest
Mark, We long timers are our own best doctors. My new endo (younger than my children) told me to take one unit of insulin if my BG was between 200 and 250. I just sort of laughed and told her that one unit would not do hardly anything to me at all and I continued to take at least 2 -3 units. Last time she said to continue to do what I was doing. She is so worried about my old body having a low BG that she wants me to have at least a continual BG of around 150.. I have very few lows and keeps it more like120-130. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2012 2:06 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: got a flex pen q please. actually my doctor thinks I'm still using 17 units twice a day. Guest guest
No, I like to educate my doctor. Don't be mislead into thinking your doctor is a walking medical encyclopedia. In fact, they usually are very grateful to learn something new. And with diabetes, which most of them know only the rudimentary basics from their medical textbooks, they gladly take in what we share with them. Guest guest
We are all our best diabetes managers. Notice I didn't say diabetes doctors. Your meter is like a Siamese twin who you weren't born attached to, but now you are (or should be). Mark, and anybody using insulin, don't be afraid to adjust your dosage. But only if you do frequent blood sugar checks, and of course, don't play around with a new dose if you plan to be doing something or going somewhere out of routine. Guest guest
now every time I have to go to the hospital, they have never went by what meds I take daily and they especially don't allow me to take my met Forman. they give me shots and what ever they are using doesn't ever lower my sugar at all. I tell them I wish to do my own diabetes and o no you can't! it goes against policy and we won't allow it. you say, go talk to my doctor and they say they did and he said for me to let them take care of my sugar because they can control it better. what a pile of poop this is! they ask why didn't I eat all of my meal? I tell them if I did my sugar would be around 250. they say it is a diabetic meal and it is ok to eat it all. so I get talked to because I think I know more about things then do the doctors and nurses. I hate going to the hospital and fighting with them about how to take care of my diabetes. then to make it worse my doctor agrees with the hospital. I do carry a list in my man purse that has a list of all my meds that I'm on at this time and it is listed on it that I use 15 units of insulin with the novalog flex pen twice a day. they have it in writing and they will the next time I have to go in do the same as always and flat ignore what is written down. remember, doctor's and nurses are always right! got a flex pen q please. this morning after getting up and before breakfast the sugar was 108. took my 15 units of insulin like normal. ate a normal breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 bacon and toast, with black coffee. took the sugar 2 hours later and it was 72. checked 3 times to make sure and it wasn't any more then 7 points higher and between. Guest guest
I haven't been in a hospital for a long time. The last time was around the time I lost my eyesight, back in the late 80s. Even at that time, I (and my wife) told the nurses, thank you, but I'll check my sugar and take care of things. Now, this was Wills Eye Hospital, so maybe they weren't as likely to put up resistance. Dave ~~ Now available: THE ATTACHÉ! -- From Desert Breeze Publishing ~~ Visit: http://www.authordavidbond.com Upcoming releases: A TIME TO BUILD -- June, 2012 SWEET MUSIC -- October, 2012 A TIME TO HEAL -- February, 2013 OUT OF THE DESERT -- July, 2013 A TIME TO DANCE -- November, 2013 got a flex pen q please. this morning after getting up and before breakfast the sugar was 108. took my 15 units of insulin like normal. ate a normal breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 bacon and toast, with black coffee. took the sugar 2 hours later and it was 72. checked 3 times to make sure and it wasn't any more then 7 points higher and between. Guest guest
And, Mark, or anyone, if you find yourself in the hospital (and cognitive) don't forget that you are asking, or telling, the people on the floor how you will handle your diabetes because your life depends on it. I have to think, if you stand firm enough, they'll back down. I've wondered what it would be like should I end up in the hospital for some reason. I wouldn't find much to eat matching my meal plan, I'm sure, and much of what I do no doubt flies in the face of conventional diabetes care. At least, from their perspective. Guest guest
I've been listening to you guys on this list for many years. even though I didn't do right by my eating most of the time, I still listened and wrote down a note book full of advice you threw out there like seeds to grab hold and grow they did. I do pay close attention and I am very careful. not going backwards again if I'm in control and now I am in control. my meter is my best friend and I stick my self no less then six times a day and up to ten and more. I always want to know exactly where I am with my sugar. I don't guess as I use to do or better to say I never cared enough to even check. had this Prodigy voice for 3 years or longer before I ever opened the box. had a acue check for the first one in 2002 and used it for maybe one year, but never used it like I do now. then I gave it away and all that went with it. took pills and got worse because I never paid any attention or cared. had my sugar checked at work by a meter they always give a new diabetic that only those with eyes can use. so if I felt bad, then I had my boss check my sugar and that was the only time it got checked. when the doc would ask how my sugar was running? I just always answered the same every time, well if I eat right, the sugar is grate, but if I eat bad and over eat it is really bad. see? I wasn't telling a lie, not really. got a flex pen q please. this morning after getting up and before breakfast the sugar was 108. took my 15 units of insulin like normal. ate a normal breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 bacon and toast, with black coffee. took the sugar 2 hours later and it was 72. checked 3 times to make sure and it wasn't any more then 7 points higher and between. Guest guest
Your hospital is backwards! I have never had that problem, but then the last time I was in the hospital, my doc backed me up on a diet and medication issue. After that, the nurses changed their attitudes! _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2012 5:07 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: got a flex pen q please. now every time I have to go to the hospital, they have never went by what meds I take daily and they especially don't allow me to take my met Forman. they give me shots and what ever they are using doesn't ever lower my sugar at all. Guest guest
Dave and All, If you end up in the hospital you had better hope that you have someone on the outside to stand by your side. Being a Diabetic is hard enough but when you add blindness to the list you, my friend, are in Deep Yogurt. If I hit the hospital my wife, Crystal, and my eldest daughter are the ones who will keep me alive. Sorry to say but it may well take someone with all of the tact and gentleness of a famished wolvereen to do the job. Hospitals, unfortunately, seem to be a bit behind on newer thinking and research on the care and feeding of a Diabetic. Guest guest
I'm kind of thinking this, too, Pat. There aren't too many nurses who will pretend to know more about diabetes than a patient who has all the gear and obviously knows what he/she is doing. They'll back off and gladly let you take care of things. Guest guest
then I need you and Pat to come up here to OKC and educate these nurses here at the local hospital I use. had this nurse last time in February that said she use to work for a diabetes specialist and she knew all there was to know about the disease. I had to fill her in on all the education I have picked up here on this list and she had to tell me how messed up my thinking was. sounded to me like she believed the ADA was on top of the diabetes education and there word was the only way to go. she made me an appointment for the specialist she worked for over twenty years, but when I left the hospital I made the appointment for a specialist closer to my house instead. I did notice that before they would shoot me with insulin they always checked my sugar first, so I could have slipped in to the bathroom and gave my self a shot with out them knowing. but I wasn't on the insulin at that time. maybe now that I got a doc that is impressed with my ability to control my sugar, the next hospital visit will go better and they will allow me to do my own thing. Guest guest
I think every hospital I have heard of does that with a diabetic diet. They give you too many grams of carbs. The last hospital I was in was great about letting me do my own insulin and testing, but always too many carbs. Since my husband was usually there when I got fed, he would eat the extra carbs! _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2012 6:56 AM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: got a flex pen q please. then I need you and Pat to come up here to OKC and educate these nurses here at the local hospital I use. had this nurse last time in February that said she use to work for a diabetes specialist and she knew all there was to know about the disease.
