I believe the Salmon around here is mostly farm raised and it isn't the same

in taste as that comes from the ocean. was wondering if any one knows if Sam's

or Wal Mart might carry the fresh sea Salmon? I know they have a name when from

the ocean and not farm raised, but can't recall them. I live a ways from the

coast in any direction. Oklahoma never gets the real sea food of any kind. here

they say they have giant shrimp, but they lie because no one here really has a

clue how big shrimp can get. I was in L A one year and went to a sea side out

door stand that was preparing shrimp. I'm here to tell you that stuff was real

good and huge as well. makes the stuff they send us here in Oklahoma look sick.

I think we are just getting the left over's that states on the coast won't eat

or buy. suppose it just cost to much to ship it in from the coast and hard to

keep it fresh for long. this is one bad thing about living in the central part

of the country.

Actually, Mark, the best sammon is identified as " river " sammon. I looked into

this because I was really gun-ho about sammon at one point because of the omega

3 and my low hdl. It's only river grown sammon which have omega 3 and it has

something to do with the food source.

well I grew up on fresh catfish and it is a world of difference in the taste

of farm raised catfish. all the restaurants here in OkC have farm raised and it

hardly even taste like fresh catfish you catch in the wild, but then I guess all

wild meat has it's own taste. some folks even say they don't like the dirty

nasty taste of fresh fish in the river's and lakes. they all prefer the farm

raised. I can't even begin to understand this, but each to there own. take a

chicken you got running around in the yard eating bugs and the such. that

chicken taste nothing like the chicken we buy in the stores. turkey is the same

way. eat a wild turkey some time if you get the chance and the difference in

taste is night and day. of course you need to continue to base the wild turkey

as it bakes or it will dry out. ever ate fresh frog legs? they are to die fore!

I've never had fresh lobster or crab legs, but those who have tell me I wouldn't

eat any of the junk I get here again. they may be right. I actually dig the

muddy taste of fresh catfish my self and sure do miss going fishing as I did as

a kid. croppy and sand bass? the country boy's and girls have this over on us

City dwellers for sure when it comes to eating wild meat as God mint for us to

do. like for example a grain feed cow that is hanging out all day in the pasture

and not locked up in a pen as big as they are and force feed 24 hours a day.

they get no exercise and they get fat real fast. they actually have no time to

mature and the meat just doesn't taste as it did years ago. soon our food will

taste like card board and we won't have a problem losing weight then because we

won't like eating any more.

I was at our local Sam's this morning. They had fresh salmon there, not the

farm raised. But it is hard to say if they would have the same kind at your

local Sam's.

I use to eat a lot of can salmon until I tried the fresh salmon and just

can't make my self go back to eating the can any more. just like can tuna. I ate

some fresh tuna on the grill one time and now I haven't ate any can tuna in

maybe ten years or more. I do buy baby shrimp in a can for salads when I run out

of the fresh frozen. seems like it was peak salmon I use to buy in a can. I do

buy sardines in a can packed in mustard. love sardines!

Pat, it could still be farm raised. In fact, more than likely, it is. I have to

think keeping river fed sammon alive for transporting, to keep alive in a tank

would be costly.

The thing is, river sammon isn't as convenient to get. That's why farm raised

fish is so popular. It can literally be mass produced, at a much lower cost. But

the fish are missing their natural food sources, which in the case of sammon,

results in little or no omega 3. So, canned sammon will allow you to purchase

river fed sammon, albeit, it will be higher in sodium. I wonder if there are any

restaurants in places like Seattle, near the Columbia River, or in Anchorage

Alaska, near the Yukon River, who promote their high quality river sammon?

Well Markie, I have to agree with you on that catfish.

A good channel cat from a nice lake is really hard to beat.

Frog legs? Yup, you bet. Squirrel fried in a covered cast iron skillet is

something to die for. My grandmother used to fry me up a mess of squirrel

and, man, that gravy was Heaven on Earth.

Smoked salmon is another real treat.

Hi ,

I forgot to mention rabbit. Now, some of those Jack Rabbits could easily

feed a small family. (LOLLOLLOLLOL)

Better cook them in a pressure cooker as they do tend to a bit tough

particularly when they are large.

Nope I never have been that far. I have been as far as Montana and Wyoming

but I was a kid on vacation in the summer of 1963 and we visited Yellowstone

National Park. Boy I would not enjoy traveling now at this age with all

this restriction.

Like you Cy I love to try and enjoy the taste of the wild. Some are good and

some are not so good like cooked eel. turtle soup was pretty good.

I dig any type of catfish God gave us to enjoy. then squirrel? my daddy had a

pecan tree in his yard and the squirrel's loved those pecans, so daddy got out

his pellet gun and filled the freezer up with squirrel. have ate many squirrel

and loved each bite. rabbit is also good. was raised on wild meat growing up. my

kinfolks figured meat was cheaper wild and tasted much better. ate coon many

times as well and snake as well. had some turtle soup once, but wasn't

impressed. ate goose and that was kind of like chewing on a lever boot. like

duck too. never had any rat, but some people around here tell me if I liked

squirrel, then rat taste about the same. of course none of them will admit to

ever eating a rat. makes me wonder though how they know a rat taste like

squirrel? quall is also good, but to dry for me to eat much of it. I'm a leg and

thie man my self and don't really get in to white meat. just to dry and not very

tasty.

That's pretty amazing. I thought antelopes were kind of big and rabbits

were kind of small. So I wonder.. well.. maybe antelopes are not big and I

guess I think of the song Home On the Range and they say the deer and the

antelope play, so I ghought an antelope was big like a deer or buffalo. I

don't see so have to imagine everything, LOL.
