Guest guest
That is what is such a great thing with type 2's. the more you exercise and tieless you eat, the less medication you need. Just take less and less insulin and see how you do. You don't want to cut down on your food intake too much, or you will get too hungry and then want to overeat. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2012 6:49 PM To: blind diabetics Subject: check this out. the diabetes doc called to day after I faxed in my last 2 weeks of numbers and he called to day to tell me to go down to 12 twice a day. well all ready done that a week ago and told him so. to night my sugar 2 hours after dinner was 135 and I checked it 3 times. it wasn't off more then 5 either way. so decided to ride my no where bike for 30 minutes to bring it down some before bed. checked it a bit ago and it was in the 70's all 3 times I rechecked it. how can that ride of only 30 minutes bring my sugar down to the 70's that fast? I took my insulin at 5-15. when my sugar gets in the 70's like that I feel bad and I have some chest pain. I told the saw bones I have had some loe readings in the 70's and 80's over the past month. not that many 70's, but mainly they happen right after I have rode my bike. all day to day my numbers has been in the 90's. actually 11 of the last 13 have been in the 90's and this is taking 12 units morning and evening. I'm starting to think that maybe I don't need the insulin any more if I continue the bike riding and taking the 2000 met Forman a day. maybe when I go see him on the eighth of June I will ask him this very thing. I can't stop riding my bike if I wish to lose weight. I would rather the insulin stop then the exercise. I guess we will find out in one week. this is why I test about eight to ten times a day. the lows like the 70's just make me feel really bad. I check before I start my ride and then I test again 30 minutes after I stop. is it better to check right as I finish the exercise or is waiting 30 minutes as I do ok? I have cut my portions down. was talking to a fitness fellow and he said if I'm riding my no where bike for 2 hours a day and only losing 2 pounds in 2 weeks, then he thinks I was still eating to many calories. so I have even cut them down more and we will soon see. I now do one hour on the no where bike of the morning and the second hour around 2 pm. I think this works better for me then the way I was doing it for a few weeks. if I wake up in the middle of the night I will check my sugar again to see where it is. storming like mad here and it sure was way hot to day. heat and cool air mixing it up together is why we have storms going on as I speak. Guest guest
I think Pat has it right. And you too, Mark. About cutting the insulin back. With t2, you have an advantage in that losing weight and exercising can in fact reverse some of the diabetes symptoms. I can't say whether or not you would ultimately be able to come off all meds, but it does happen with t2's. Good job! Guest guest
I agree with Pat and Dave but would add that being over weight can affect insulin requirements for Type ones as well. I’ve been a T1 since 1960, and I have lost 33 pounds since January 17 of this year. I weighed 196.4 January 17, and I now weigh 163. My insulin requirements have gone down significantly. My insulin carb ratio was 1 unit of insulin for every 6 grams of carbs. It is now 1 unit of insulin for every 20 grams of carbs. Danny Come and follow Jesus, and He will make you fishers of men. Guest guest
Good job, Danny! Good to hear this about t1's as well. I'd bet with a t1, as weight comes off, the insulin is able to get absorbed into the bloodstream more efficiently. Guest guest
That is an incredible job. I think this works better for me then the way I was doing it for a few weeks. if I wake up in the middle of the night I will check my sugar again to see where it is. storming like mad here and it sure was way hot to day. heat and cool air mixing it up together is why we have storms going on as I speak. Guest guest
mainly the 70's and the 60's makes me feel really bad. I have some chest pane as well when it is this low. then after Pat sent out that post about tight control not good for us who have heart issues? well that did it for me! I can handle the 80's 90's and under 120, but lower then 80 I don't want any part of. I made this clear to my doc. some times I will even wake up in the middle of the night with the shakes and my sugar will be in the 70's. maybe it is just that I got to get use to the sugar being this low as I had to do for the rest when I was first put on insulin and it was coming down. If my A1C can be between 5.5 and 6.5, then I will be a happy pig and a fine gentlemen to boot. check this out. the diabetes doc called to day after I faxed in my last 2 weeks of numbers and he called to day to tell me to go down to 12 twice a day. well all ready done that a week ago and told him so. to night my sugar 2 hours after dinner was 135 and I checked it 3 times. it wasn't off more then 5 either way. so decided to ride my no where bike for 30 minutes to bring it down some before bed. checked it a bit ago and it was in the 70's all 3 times I rechecked it. how can that ride of only 30 minutes bring my sugar down to the 70's that fast? Guest guest
You're right, Mark, about acclimating to lower readings. The 70s, or even 80s, will sometimes feel pretty unsettling if your body is used to really high numbers. Then again, if you can keep your numbers no lower than the 80s, and as a t2, you stand a better chance of doing this consistently, then by all means do it. Cut your dosage back another couple units if you need to. And as Harry mentioned, maybe you can even do away with some of the oral meds. Guest guest
the thing I have learned about my meter is, if I hear the beep as soon as I put my stuck finger up to the strip, then this means it will be a correct reading. however, if it takes me a while to get any blood to cause it to beep, then the reading is most of the time something crazy like 14 or 34. this is the bad thing about the Prodigy. the Solo will tell you if you don't have enough blood to test. testing as many as ten times a day now for 3 months has all my fingers sore, but the poking will go on and that is just how it must be. of course putting the poker on the highest tension so I will draw blood isn't the nicest thing to do, but the low setting gives me nothing but a bad attitude. even on the hardest hit, I still got to hit my finger a couple of times in order to get enough blood to make a beep. warm water and hot water! milk the finger and squeeze until it cries! I'm learning all the tricks of the trade. 3 days is about all a needle is good for in the pen poker. I do use the same needle for both shots of insulin in a day. I change it each morning. seems like the spring in the finger stickers would ware out after a while, so going to pick me up a couple to have on hand. O well! we live and we learn! check this out. the diabetes doc called to day after I faxed in my last 2 weeks of numbers and he called to day to tell me to go down to 12 twice a day. well all ready done that a week ago and told him so. to night my sugar 2 hours after dinner was 135 and I checked it 3 times. it wasn't off more then 5 either way. so decided to ride my no where bike for 30 minutes to bring it down some before bed. checked it a bit ago and it was in the 70's all 3 times I rechecked it. how can that ride of only 30 minutes bring my sugar down to the 70's that fast? Guest guest
How great for you Dan. I wish my friend, who is also a long term type 1 would do that for herself. Good job! Guest guest
I've been fully cognitive with readings in the 20s, but the 14 reading is the only reading in the teens I know of. It'd be interesting to know what the lowest blood glucose reading on record is, with the person surviving.
