Guest guest
Just got back from my doctor's office. I got the results for my first a1c since having started on Insulin 3 months ago. Dropped from a 9% to 6.4% using ten units per night. My usual doctor going back to 1995 retired so I have a new one now, much younger and much more detailed oriented which I really like. He took me off of Actos because he didn't like the combination of Actos with Insulin so sticking with just 1500mg per day of Metformin and 10mg per day of Glyburide. I was really happy to see how well I've responded to the Insulin. He also explained to me how to vary the number of Insulin units depending on my BG readings, something that my old doctor never explained. Let's see how it goes in 3 months. Guest guest
Good job! (It's nice to say this to listers!) Glad to hear your younger doc seems to have a more fluid approach to managing diabetes. This is what we often talk about on the list. Taking charge, and doing what has to be done, when it needs to be done. As Mark has done by lowering his dosage, without being told by his doc, or instead of waiting to be told to do so. Guest guest
Hello, Rick, Congratulations are certainly in order because we know it was not only your medications that brought your A1C down but your careful, hard work. Dotty
Guest guest
Hi there Dotty. Thanks. I could have had these results a long time ago but my biggest enemy was my own fear of using Insulin. Honestly, I was scared to death of taking that step for the longest time. Actually, it was this list that helped me understand that it wasn't so bad. Now I see it's a piece of cake and don't mind it at all thanks to the availability of the Insulin pen. I wouldn't mind getting rid of the Metformin and Glyburide as well if possible. Guest guest
Those who have been on this list a while should know how to lower there A1C by doing it the right way. most saw bones go by the text book method, but each is different and always pay attention to what your body is telling you. make buddies with your meter, trust it and Pray for success. After this? all will be well with you. then you can share your success with the list and again a new comer can and will do the same. soon we will go national and be a famous list that every one and there dog that is diabetic will be knocking the doors down to join! probably will take six months just to read one day of post and longer to get your message in. Now lets see, if the list owner got $2 per member, and we had about ten million members, well we would all hit the owner up for a loan? Guest guest
And to think, the other list I moderate I only charge a buck per member, and there are only 1 million members. Guest guest
they say a million bucks isn't what it use to be. I heard a lady found a ticket in the trash in a store that sold lottery tickets. well the ticket was worth one million bucks! she spent a lot of the money as most of us would. now the store owner is taking her to court and the judge said the ticket belongs to the real owner who only pitched it in the trash because the store told her it was not a winning ticket. now I say one man's trash is another man's riches. if she found it in the trash, then it should be her's. the woman who threw it away shouldn't lay clame on it now after putting it in the garbage. they say she may have to pay back the money she has all ready spent. I would tell them all to go suck a egg! well send you the email if I still got it. Very happy with A1c improvement Just got back from my doctor's office. Guest guest
Hello, Rick, Then you made a brave move to get with the pens. Now add a noninvasive meter to your wish list and we'll all be in the money. Actually, the Israelis are working on it, it's in clinical trials now. Guest guest
Pat, That's actually an interesting question and my answer may seem strange. For whatever reason, I really don't feel any different. Even when my a1c was high, I felt just fine. I never got any of the symptoms like thirst or frequent need to urinate that I understand is supposed to accompany high blood sugar. In fact, now that my BG is down, I actually for the first time, experienced what low BG felt like a few nights ago when I started feeling shaky and weird. It was the middle of the night so I got up and took a reading and my BG was 62. I had never experienced that feeling before and I sure didn't like it. My wife got me some candy and I felt a lot better after eating it. I tested again after feeling better and my BG was then 74. I think for sure I'm one of those people that is definitely more comfortable with a BG 80 or higher. The new doctor was quite happy with my 6.4% a1c. I'm going to continue to see if I can get that figure lower but really have to be careful not to go to low. Guest guest
try taking glucagon instead of candy when low. it dissolves quickly and is available in different flavors. watermelon is a nice one that I learned about on this line. a hard candy does not dissolve near as fast. you can easily carry a few in your pocket or purse, I put them in a little jiffy bag to keep them clean. Guest guest
I can't recall the name but I just purchased 2 plastic tubes of some flavored tablets for $3. They claim to have 4 grams of sugar per tablet. I imagine it's more or less the same thing you are referring to. Actually, it wasn't hard candy that I used that night, it was some really good chocolate covered nuts. I definitely enjoyed it. Guest guest
That is a great A1C. Yes, it is uncomfortable to feel that way when low. I don't feel anything until my sugars are in the 50's. Not good as it can quickly drop from the 50's to really low where you are too out of it to do what you need to raise it. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Rick Alfaro Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2012 6:32 AM To: blind-diabetics Subject: RE: Very happy with A1c improvement Pat, That's actually an interesting question and my answer may seem strange.
