Guest guest Posted February 7, 2007 Report Share Posted February 7, 2007 INDIANAPOLIS Fifteen years ago, Badger, 68, was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare autoimmune disease that slowly destroyed her liver. She was placed on a transplant list in 1999 and waited two years to receive a new liver. By that time, her skin and eyes had become discolored, her hair was falling out, her brain functions were impaired and her hip was broken. She also was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and 30 days of radiation therapy. The cancer has gone into remission. The award was a surprise, Badger said. " When you have a passion and you volunteer many hours toward that passion, you don't expect to be recognized, " she said. " It's a wonderful thing . . . I'm extremely grateful.
