Guest guest
(ost tx 2 years) called from college yesterday with symptoms of what I thought was strep. I called his team and they said he definitely should go to the ER for a swab. His Dr also said if he tested positive to never get put on Erythromyacin, Biaxin or a Z-pac. She said they up the prograf level so high in the blood it can put you in kidney failure very fast. This was the first I heard of this. Is this what your Drs are saying? Guest guest
All these antibiotics share the same metabolic pathway used by tacrolimus and cyclosporine, and if used together would require recalibrating the dose of immunosuppressant required to achive the desired blood level. Not something you'd want to do for a 1 or 2 week course of antibiotics. My doctor also nixed using augmentin, I believe because of the Joint Formulary Committee's report in the British National Formulary, 47th edition (2004) that " [augmentin] has been associated with an increased incidence of cholestatic jaundice and acute hepatitis during therapy or shortly after, particularly in men and those aged over 65 years. The associated jaundice is usually self-limiting and very rarely fatal. " Now I'm not yet 65, but would hate to be one of the rare cases where the jaundice was fatal.
