Guest guest
A recent local appeal for blood donors brought this subject to mind. Since all of the members of my immediate family have spent considerable time in the UK, none of us is permitted to donate blood in our area. Is this a U.S. wide ban on donors who have been in the UK? This is, of course, the result of concern about " mad cow " disease. More importantly, how does this affect organ donors? Are organ donors' families asked about time spent in affected areas? Any thoughts? Penny
Guest guest
That is interesting I have not heard of that before. I know that since my cousin had a blood transfusion in 1996 she will never be able to donate blood (she was bummed she wanted to donate). Unfortunately I can't donate, it is too hard on my body-it is a good thing I am not a sick person, my poor little veins just can't handle the prodding..... Guest guest
It’s not only a US thing. Here in Israel people who lived in the UK in the mad cow disease era are not allowed to donate blood either. Guest guest
-I also tried to donate blood and was turned down because I lived in the UK for periods ranging from 6 weeks to two years and different times between 1988 and 2001. Again due to mad cow disease. I was so upset because I believe there are people in the US who may have been in contact with it although they have never been outside the US because it has also been found in the US and they may be able to give blood.
