Pulse Oximeter-Brand? Covered by Major Medical/Blue Cross

I am looking for a portable pulse oximeter that is finger-size. I

would like to know if anyone has any good or bad experiences with a

particluar brand or model. The prices have a large range, and I am

not sure if paying more gets you more or better. I only need the

blood oxygen measurement.

I have Medicare and a 65 special plan, but I also have a major medical

plan that covers medical equipment that Medicare might not cover (PA).

Has anyone had a major medical plan cover this? If so, and you don't

mind, could you tell me if it was through Pennsylvania Blue Cross?

What model did they cover?

Thank you for your help. Best wishes for good health to all.

A few people have had them covered by insurance. However, most of us have not. Any FDA approved pulse oximeter will do fine. The industry standard is the Nonin 9500 which is generally available online for about $240-250. However, many members have purchased the model on this page which is $64.95. They have been very pleased with it.

Do not purchase the Ascent $58.95 model shown on elsewhere on their site as it does not appear to be FDA approved.

Portable Nebs did carry the Nonin, but don't show it now.

However, here is a site with the Nonin now.

Personally I'd go with the Choice model for $64.95 seeing as how you can buy three and a half of them for the price of one Nonin.

Hi,

My insurance paid for mine (back when I had insurance) I retained my employers coverage for several months through Cobra. It was in NY however and it was Aetna. I also did it a bit differently. I purchased it myself and then submitted the prescription and the invoice to Aetna. They reimbursed me in full in about 30 days. I bought the Nonin and paid around $250.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I got the $65 version mentioned by Bruce, checked its calibration at my pulmo's office, and even my pulmo said there was no reason for me to pay more than $65.

Curious about where you live, since you have PA Blue Cross coverage.

I live outside of Boyertown, about 45 miles west of Philly. Zion

lives closer to the city. ( BTW - to you New Yorkers, the " CITY " does

not always mean New York and Manhattan)

I have a friend at work with Sarcoidosis resulting in his PF. He sees

a doc down at Drexel University. His doc just went on a temporary

leave of absense to deal with some medical problems that his son is

experiencing. He is not really happy with the new guy he is seeing.

Just curious how close we live.

I also have one of the SPO's you reference. I bought it initially. I

like aspects of it. Perhaps because of my finger size, I do find it

registers slower than the Nonin and sometimes it doesn't give a reading

and I have to retry. On the other hand, its very visible even in bright

sunlight and I do like that. So, while not my favorite, its still a good

oximeter. BCI also has a good reputation. As long as an oximeter is FDA

approved it should do what one needs.
