Try eating a yogurt before taking the metformin.

Subject: metformin questions

Bit of background had been taking Januvia for about 4 years when my a1c

started going up with no change to my life style or eating habits. So doc

switched me to Metformin. We began a month ago with 250 MG's a day and have

slowly worked up to 500 twice a day.

So how long can I expect to be running to the bathroom multiple times a day?

Also for the past few days I've had severe episodes of nausea 1 was so bad I

thought I'd pass out. I s this related? And if so is there anything I can

do.

Also for the past 3 weeks I have been very very itchy particularly at night

when I'm not as easily distracted. I wake up 2 or 3 times a night itching in

different places. My hands and wrists feet and ankles, upper arms. The

itching during the day rotates too? Could this be some strange side effect.

I spoke with my doctor who encouraged me to use my OTC allergy medication

and keep her posted. So I've been using that and a cream I bought.

In short I feel pretty awful. Any thoughts?

I became a type 2 diabetic 6 years

ago, and began with metformin. At first I was on the throne a lot, but over

time, that subsided, and at this point I'm regular. The only problem I have is

when I eat too much ice cream. Then it's on the throne for a while.

Oh, Becky, I have had to be strong in a lot of areas lately, but I do slip

up with this stuff. I also still have to poke myself a lot for testing and

there are some days I just say heck with it. It is coming very slowly. I

have been on this diabetes merry-go-round 15 months now and I will admit I

do feel better than before I was diagnosed simply because I do not drink

regular pop. I move around more and go out of the house a lot. But I do

still have food weaknesses and want to eat a few things I know I will regret

when he gets my A1C again. My last one was 11.8. So I could be still in

some trouble but I don't really get too tired unless I am out all day.

And I am staying in the same area of weight within 4 pounds either way.

So some people say I am doing much better. Some of the stress is gone but I

have to be careful not to replace it with new stresses.

The slow release form of metformin was developed for the gastric side

effects. With the regular form it causes a sharp increase in blood

level while the slow release form keeps to a more or less constant

level.

Gee , an A1C of 11 is extremely high and consistently running that will

cause complication. Let's hope the exercise and less eating has brought

that down.
