Guest guest
Adam, There's clear scientific evidence that fish oil omega 3 fatty acids can improve your liver function tests by inhibiting inflammation, so a lot of us are taking some form of fish oil supplements. DHA, one fish oil component, may be more effective than EPA, another component, so I take Cod liver oil from Spectrum Essentials because it has more DHA than EPA. DHA is also available from Martek Labs, from a plant source. Check out the PSC partners website for past issues of the newsletter. has done a fantastic job distilling the scientific literature for our members. I'm sensitive to milk; my colonoscopies are normal if I'm not consuming milk products, and it's not lactose intolerance. There's no great evidence it helps my liver, but I avoid dairy, but it's a real pain in the... On the other hand, if you restrict your diet too much you won't be getting good nutrition, so be cautious with radical diets that come with vague claims about toxins, allergies, etc. With these diets, your life may not be any longer; it might just SEEM longer! Guest guest
Hi Adam, Glad to hear from you. I usually just lurk, but my husband (UC 1977, PSC 2003) has had no signs of UC in colonoscopies since 1998 when he stopped consuming milk products, beef, chicken, pork, game or many fried foods. Like other posters have said, it's different for everyone and he had food intolerance tests done in 1998 that showed allergies to the above foods. He eats a lot of fish, kale and other greens and luckily can eat tofu, wheat gluten, tvp and other meat substitutes. He's also on a DHA supplement and multivitamin. Has anyone heard about a supplement from a Japanese company called Honso that manufacturers a healthy liver function supplement? has seen an MD/PhD Pharmacologist who said that this supplement has helped many patients with Hep C improve liver function, but I said we'd run it by you guys and his hep before giving it a shot. I wanted to thank the group for info. about high dose Urso levels. I know this doesn't guarantee anything long term, but based on info. from this group, we convinced 's hep to increase his daily urso dosage at the beginning of the year. His labs yesterday came back normal for the first time in over a year and his doctor has agreed to keep him on the higher dose. It also has helped with his itching. Thanks for being here!
