During the 21 years between dx and tx, I didn't really change my diet. I was raising 2 young children and we ate what I considered a healthy but normal diet. I canned my own fruit because my family grew it, and ate lots of fresh fruit, especially apples. We also raised rabbits for our own consumption and also ate venison, because it was plentiful. Other than that, I shopped at the regular grocery stores for food and dairy. I will say that most of our meals were cooked from scratch, rather than buying processed food. I liked to cook and so I bought ingredients to make stews, soups and casseroles. I cooked like my mother did in the 40's and 50's, before TV dinners and canned chili etc.

My recommendation for eating is, all things in moderation, and do your own cooking. I also think it is better to have a few cookies when you want them rather than deny yourself all comfort food and live in a constant state of hunger or thinking about all the food you want but won't eat. If a special diet means spending all your time thinking of food, what you are going to eat and what you are not going to eat, can it really be healthy? QUALITY OF LIFE is more important. I also think that some extra weight can help get you through episodes of being too sick to eat. I'm talking 10 to 15 pounds to provide a cushion to lose before your body starts consuming your muscles. During the course of an infection I lost over 30 lbs and ended up mostly bones and flabby skin, but I was able to get my strength back because I still had some muscle to work with.

Food plays such a large part of our lives we need analyze how it affects our personel life and decide what and how to eat.

That is my sermon for this Sunday, live well and be happy.
