Hi Phil,

Developing diabetes with PSC isn't too unusual. I was told I was diabetic 16 years after dx, and 5 years before my tx. I wasn't surprised because it runs in my family, but my liver docs told me "when one body system starts to collapse, other can follow." The diabetes, once well managed, doesn't interfere with a tx. I was on oral meds for it until after my tx in 2002, and then went on insulin 7 months later. I feel the injections make it easier to keep my glucose numbers down because I can fine tune it, and if I want a bit of sweets, I can take an extra unit or two of fast acting insulin. The trick with that is to remember that extra insulin puts on fat, so it can be a double whammy if I get a frequent sweet tooth.

The creatine level can be affected by many things from a reaction to meds to an infection. I had a major kidney infection before my transplant and was in the hospital for almost a month and then in a nursing home for 4 weeks, so I could get strong enough to function at home. Don't hesitate to get to a doc to see what is going on. If your kidneys start to fail, then trouble is on your doorstep. Get a referral to a nephrologist if you are worried.

If you are hooked up to a transplant team then they should be able to advise you, if not, then it is time to find a hospital that does transplants and get to know the staff and what they have to offer.

It sounds like we had similar complications before transplant so please remember, life is much better with a new liver.

Take care

Don't forget, too, that creatinine is one of the three primary measures that comprise your MELD score, which is the primary factor when assigning your transplant priority. Thus, it very well could be related.Osteopenia is also common...I was just diagnosed a couple weeks ago myself. Although in my case, this could be the result of some heavy prednisone doses of late, I've started on fosamax...one pill a week is nothing compared to the couple dozen pills I take every day!TomPSC 1999Crohns 2004 C , EA Consulting Group, Inc.2005 Loudoun County Service Business of the Year19440 Golf Vista Plaza Ste 240Leesburg, VA 20176 cell faxThis written advice is not intended or written to be used, and it cannot be used by a taxpayer, for the purpose of avoiding penalties that may be imposed on the taxpayer.
