Ken has asked me to ask you –

He has been having trouble sleeping (more so than his

usual) because his arms keep falling asleep. It doesn’t matter which side he

sleeps on or how/where he positions his arms and he can’t sleep on his

back. He is also still complaining

about his last two fingers on one hand that are numb – this has been

going on for about 6 weeks now. He

just wants to know if this is happening to anyone else and if so - were you

able to solve the problem and how?

Thanks,

Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight, Whatever it Takes!

Barb and Ken:

Could Ken be clenching his fists? Or even carpel tunnel, or mine is arthritis.

Check thos out and I am sorry I don't know more.

Bob also has terrible sleeping problems with getting comfortable and can't sleep

on his back because of the ileo. He has gotten a slew of different pillows and

every night there is the big decision is, one or any will work. I know also

that all the years of his shoulder, back and leg problems are more than likely

arthritis. Reading the posts really confirm this for me.

Barb, it could be a pinched ulnar nerve. Those two fingers go numb

when that occurs. Is it only when he sleeps? i'd go see a

neurologist to check it out. HTH

This started with me 15-20 years ago. I just roll over to the other side. I

also wear sleeveless shirts now to bed (or shirtless in summer) - seems to help.

Sometimes if I'm sleeping more soundly than usual (I'm a light sleeper), I'll

wake up and won't even be able to move my fingers for a while.

Have not experienced numb fingers though.

This is one of the symptoms my wife had when she started having problems

with her thyroid. I've also read that liver disease is often associated

with hypothyroid problems, so that might be worth getting checked out.

Here is a pretty good reference with a technical discussion of the

relationship between liver disease and thyroid dysfunction::

http://qjmed.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/95/9/559

" Primary sclerosing cholangitis is associated with an increased

incidence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves's disease and Riedel's

thyroiditis. "

And here's a list of possible symptoms of hypothroidism:

* Gaining weight for no obvious reason (with normal diet and exercise)

* Can't lose weight even if you diet and/or exercise more

* Constipation (frequent/severe)

* Low body temperature (often below 98), sensitive to cold

* Cold hands and feet (poor circulation)

* Fatigue/exhaustion (even with 'enough' sleep)

* Feeling " sluggish " or lethargic

* Slow hair growth/coarse, dry or tangled hair/hair breakage

* Dry or scaly skin

* Sore throat/hoarse or gravelly voice

* 'Puffy' face/eyes or general edema and/or inflammation

* Aches and pains in joints, hands and feet

* New (or increasing) carpal tunnel syndrome

* Irregular menstrual cycles (longer, or heavier, or more frequent)

* Impaired conception or history of miscarriage

* Depression/feeling 'worthless' or sad

* Restlessness/difficulty concentrating

* Moody/frequent mood swings

* Losing interest in regular activities

* Forgetfulness/feeling 'spacey'

'Extra' Symptoms (more frequent in hypothyroid patients)

* Lower than normal sex drive

* Tingling or numbness in hands and feet

* Recurring or stubborn infections/illnesses

* Snoring or sleep apnea

* Shortness of breath/tight feeling in chest

* Yawning when you're not tired

* Dry, uncomfortable and/or sensitive eyes

* Eye tics and/or headaches

* Tightness or swollen feeling in neck/throat

* Tinnitus (ringing ears)

* Frequent sinus infections

* Vertigo and/or lightheadedness

* Severe menstrual cramps

I'll wake up quite often with my fingers tingling. I assumed it was

the way I was sleeping. This has been going on for years. Just this

morning I had to hit the snooze button because I could feel the sliding

button to turn the alarm off. Mine generally goes away in a minute.

Barb,

I have my lower arm, from elbow to wrist that is numb.

I had blood drawn in that arm, and didn't feel the

poke, but did feel a very intense pain in my

arm.....Now it feels numb, but if I move it just

right, it is very painful. The phlebotomist says she

got close to a nerve. I have never had that happen

before.

The numbness means that the nerves are not working. I practice Internal

medicine and see this frequently.

The nerves can be pinched in the neck as they come off the spinal cord

by arthritis and disk problems in the neck. They can become pinched in

near the elbow or at the wrist. The carpel tunnel on the thumb side

causes numbess in the thumb, 2nd, 3rd and half the 4th. If the ulnar

side is blocked the tingling will be in the 5th finger (unlikely that

this would cause trouble turning off an alarm.

Nerves become more suseptable to going to sleep when pinched under

certian conditions;

-diabetes,

-B12 def.

-alcohol

-tacrolimus and other meds

-fluid retention....

Which tests? blood tests for b12, glucose, cmp

and neck MRI would be my first choice.

Nerve conduction tests would help sort it out but probably wouldn't be

needed.

Good Luck
