Food, you will soon learn that diabetes is different for every individual. What one person can eat, another cannot. The best way to learn what will work for you is by eating, then testing two hours later. You need to talk with a nutritionist or diabetes educator. They will work with you to get you started on a food plan. As you go along, you will probably have to make changes to the plan, but having a starting point is what you need now. I eat almost anything I want. I really haven't give up any food. I eat less of certain foods and I plan my meals/snacks according to my exercise/activities. I eat more carbs at breakfast and lunch because I'm doing housework, yardwork, shopping, walking, etc. At dinner, I usually have a salad with protein. This is what works for me. It may or may not work for you. I eat sugar-free pudding, SF jello with whipped topping. I eat lots of the low-carb yogurt. I like the Kroger brand, but Blue Bunny also has a low-carb yogurt. I'll add some cocoa powder to the yogurt and it is better than soft serve ice cream. I use Splenda in my cereal, in my hot tea. At first, with all the information, all the food plans, etc, it is going to be overwhelming. Just take it one day or one meal at a time. Guest guest
Hi Mike! I'm so glad you found this group! I'm still relatively new to the whole thing myself but have learned lots and am still learning. What works for most people is to cut out sugar and find a sugar substitute that you like (Splenda works for me). I cut out soda completely (cold-turkey), cut back on my carbs (Hi, I'm Peg and I'm a carboholic), and cut back on my fat intake. I've found that switching to whole wheat bread and whole grain anything is helpful. I limit pasta (unless it's low-carb), white rice, and spuds (that was a tough one). I eat more salads and nuts etc. I drink lots of bottled water (tap water here is disgusting) and some coffee and hot tea. You are fortunate to have access to a gym! Walking is my main source of exercise and plan to get some hand weights and use the step that my sweetie built for me. Start slow and work your way up to working out longer a bit at a time. Start 3 times a week and if time allows in a month or two work out 4 times a week. Your stamina will improve with time. Don't give up, it will seem very hard at first but will get easier as time passes! It is so very important you get a good handle on your blood sugars, your health is at serious risk otherwise. If you don't have a blood glucose meter it's a good idea to get one and start testing. Some folks test between 3 to 8 times daily YMMV. There are lots of good folks on this list who have much more knowledge of this but I wanted to put in my .02 in as I've been where you are now. Since September I've lost 40 pounds and my blood sugar is better but still bouncing around a bit (stress will sure spike it). I feel better physically not having dizziness, horrible mood swings, blurry vision, burning feet, numbness in my hands and feet near so much. I also take a good multiple high potency vitamin. I sure hope you've found some of this helpful. Be proud that you're starting a new, healthier life! You deserve it as do your loved ones! Peg -- Hi everyone I'm Mike and I'm a diabetic in Boston, MA. I saw this site on yahoo and thought I'd give it a try. It looks very interesting. I read through the past posts and saw a lot of wisdom. Anyway... it's New Years Eve and tomorrow I'm going to give it a real shot. IT meaning exercise, diet, the whole works... I've gained a lot of weight in the past few months. I'm type two, on glyburide and glucophage, and the past few weeks my blood sugars have been very high. My AC1 is 10.0, not good, and I'm going to get serious. A couple of questions for discussion: does anyone have a workout routine that works well for them? I have access to a gym with Nautilus, but really have to say I'm not in good shape. What are some good starting workouts? How about diet? What works for people? I love sugar, and will struggle to give it up, but gotta try. I realize that people can provide strength and support and I'll need some for a while. Thanks for any help you can give me. I'll check in later. Guest guest
Tina, My diabetes nurse told me to up my Glucophage to 1000 mg and I have been constantly freezing since then, even with the heater at 70. I am also one of those who never feels like they have enough sleep, with the exception of last night. Of course, now I am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. I haven't had the other problem, though. Just been sick to my stomach ever since I started taking the 2nd glucophage. Guest guest
Hi Everyone! I am feeling better today. I slept until 9:00 this morning. Then I went to get a manicure and have my hair done. does not get to work at the daycare today (their numbers are down). Enrollment & attendance of children detemines if she gets to work. Yesterday she worked from 8 am to 3:30 pm. My area has been in such a slump, I am hoping a change of Presidents in November will help. Yesterday I called Leanne and we prayed for the hurricanes to go away!!!! Toodles! Guest guest
Jane, I'm glad you're feeling better today! A manicure sounds like fun...there's nothing like a little primping is there? Too bad didn't get to work today. My sister has a taking care of her kids too. But her is from West Yorkshire in England and is in the US with AuPair in America. She's a very sweet girl. My sister went back to work yesterday...sigh. She really went back with a heavy heart. If I won the lottery the first thing I'd do would be to make it possible for her to stay home with the kids or at least drop back to working part time. That's what she'd really like to do. Boy did I get off track there. I'm feeling better today myself. I went over to the other side of Durham to look after my elderly lady, then stopped to browse at the library on my way home. It's not raining here yet but it's coming. Tomorrow I will have a perfect excuse to hang around and do nothing. The name of my excuse will be Hanna!
