Guest guest
I had a dexa scan about a month ago which showed osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis). The doctor put me on Fosamax, and now I'm wondering if I'm reacting to it. I take the pill as directed first thing on Saturday mornings. I've taken two pills so far. In each case, I was sick all day on Sunday. This week was particularly bad, with a 103 degree fever and uncontrollable chills. The fever broke overnight on Sunday, and by Monday, things were pretty much back to normal. Has anyone else in the group been prescribed Fosamax, and is this a normal side effect? I'm hesitant to take any more of the drug if this is what I can expect. Tom
Guest guest
Tom, The first few weeks I took Fosamax I felt like crap. I was dizzy, confused, and felt like I was going to get sick. My mood was horrible, I bit my partner's head off. These effects were usually gone by the next morning. Bottom line, after about three or four weeks it didn't bother me. I guess I got over the side effects. I have been taking it every Sunday morning and using the half hour of being vertical afterward to make Finnish pancakes for breakfast. Guest guest
Tom, I have been on Fosamax for about 5 years, now. I don't recall any side effects that i can remember at the start. And if there was, then it would have been mild and disappeared, quickly. Otherwise i did not experience any during those 5 yrs. I was prescribed a new Fosamax that has Calcium added to the formula recently. By the way i did ask my doctor about what i have read few months ago. That Fosamax might be reversible after 5 years of use. She told me that there is a controvursery on the issue. But it would be safe to take for 5 more years [a total of 10 for a beginner]. Also that it might be more reversible in the 70yr and older, adult groups. I think it is best to ask your doctor again and see if he or she wants to switch you to some other drug. It would be interesting to know. I did mention Boniva, a new medicine, i think, but she did not want to prescribe it for me. The think that i did not like is that she did not think i would need a new Bone Density Testing right now, to see if i can stop Fosamax. I did have the test repeated after 2 years of the start and it did show good improvement to my Osteoporosis. Guest guest
I have recently been diagnosed with osteopenia myself and taken two weeks worth of fosamax. I have only noted I had severe knee pain on both knees and stiffening joints thus far. It subsided after a day or so however. Guest guest
I've been on Fosamax for 7 years or so. No adverse effects at all. And it's done wonders for my bone density. I had significant bone density loss prior to starting this drug. My BMD is now normal. I tale calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, and I do weight training to stimulate bone growth. And despite still being on prednisone 9 years out from transplant, my BMD is normal. It's not one thing but the combination of all these things, drugs and exercise, that have made the difference for me. There are other bisphosphonates (drugs like Fosamax) some of which are in tablet form, others that requires IV injection, there are hormonal drugs like Calcitonin, which stimulate bone growth, there are vitamin D analogues like calcitriol and of course calcium. The last alone, won't increase bone density in people with osteoporosis. Some people will respond to calcitriol and calcium. But most people in our situation need a drug to prevent further bone loss. That is where the bisphosphonates or other drugs come in handy. There are couple of drugs that can only be used in women, post-menopausally. Talk to your doctors and review all the possible options. Guest guest
I also have osteopenia, first scanned 4 years ago, but I was prescribed 1500mg of calcium daily. Last fall I had another scan and the BMD was the same as 4 years ago- low, but not osteoporosis. My primary care said he would NOT use Fosamax for osteopenia, only osteoporosis. He pushed impact exercise like walking and running, as I am pre-menopausal. I realize not everyone can exercise like that, but I am asymptomatic. We will check again in a year to see if it's done any good. Martha (MA)
