Betsy was diagnosed with PSC in May of 2001. She was diagnosed with

UC at the same time and takes Asacol/Actigall. She has been well

since then with fatigue only. However, over the past few months she

has developed severe itching of her body in fact she has open lesions,

scars and scabbing no more than an inch apart. She has tried Questran

with no alleviation of her itching. Her Gastro MD is placing her on

Rifampin as of today. Her LFT's are normal. Does this itching mean

progression of the PSC? Betsy is seeing her transplant surgeon end of

April and having an MRI of her liver prior to this. As her mom I am

trying to be knowledgeable as possible of this disease. Does anyone

have any opinions or thoughts for me? Betsy's mom

Hi,

I am very curious, on what type of ASA/mesalamine drug Betsy is on?

I am sure this is not a general rule, however I know that I was on Pentasa and I had severe itching, when they took me off the itching stopped. as soon as I resumed itching started again. Right now I am on Colazal and tg no itching.

I would be very interested to know.

Thanks,

Shaul

Hi Beth;

Our son was diagnosed with stage 2 PSC and UC in July/August 2003. He

was also given high dose ursodiol and asacol. He didn't experience any

itching until a few months after diagnosis, after his LFT's had already

returned to near normal! His itching was promptly taken care of by a

prescription of rifampin. I hope this works for Betsy too!

Best regards,

Dave
