Hi, my dad was diagnosed with PSC nine months ago. He suffers with

terrible itching (all over) and sweating (mainly the abdomen). I

wondered if anybody has any tips/remedies they can share that might

help alleviate these symptoms - he has tried different medications, but

to no avail. Any advice would be appreciated! x

e,

For me, the most effective drug against itching was rifampin. Although

what works for one person may not work for another. You didn't mention

what your dad has tried, so I suggest you look at into the medications

mentioned in the " What is pruritus? " (itching) section of the FAQ on

PSC at http://home.insightbb.com/~rhodesdavid/FAQ.htm.

Less than a year prior to being diagnosed with PSC, I had a thyroid

condition (Grave's Disease, hyperthyroidism) which made me sweat

INTENSELY and itch even more intensely. I also had rapid heart rate,

insomnia, weight loss, increased appetite. After taking medication to

clear get my thyroid under control, the itching and teh sweating, etc.

stopped. If your dad is having any of these other symptoms, he might

want to have his thyroid levels checked - blood test.

Hello.....I feel his pain (or should I say misery of

itching)

Wear loose fitting clothes, cotton preferred

Keep skin moisturized with lotion (I have found

Diabese Skin Calming lotion works to calm my skin down

after bathing)

I've tried Questran, hydroxyzing, Benadry, Zofran (to

which I am taking all of them right now), along with

Naltrexone and Ambien CR (at night to knock me out)

The most important thing I find, is, if itching is

keeping me awake, it takes it toll on me, so even

though I have some itching during the day, everyday,

as long as I know my trusty meds will help me get a

rested night...it's a bit more tolerable.

Try to avoid scratching - yeah right....my body is

nothing but scabs and scars...and no body part goes

unaffected. If I sweat, the itching intensifies, so

the key is to 'not sweat'.
