Guest guest
Just a quick update... I talked with at Vanderbilt today, and I'm now 3rd on the list over there. We were planning on going out of town over the weekend, but they said there was a small but real chance I could be offered a liver this weekend, so we're putting the trip on hold. I really wasn't sure I was feeling up to the trip anyway (nausea, itching and extreme fatigue) so maybe that's for the best even if I don't get a call! I'm trying not to let my hopes get up, I know it could be a long time yet before I actually get a tx. I'll keep y'all updated on it as any developments happen. athan

Guest guest
athan, Good luck on your wait. If you remmeber, I know the drill well at Vanderbilt. I was lucky on the waiting list but I did have several false starts. First time I got the call I was in a hospital in SC due to a strep infection on my shoulder so no go. I then was in the nashville area since I was 1,2 on the list and home was about 5-6 hours away. I got the call in about a week, went in, prepped etc but it turned out the donor liver was too damaged. So then we waited another week or two and success - sort of. Unfortunately, I had to be retransplanted a couple months later but I was surprised at the quickness in offers once your high on the list. Hopefully you have a speedy wait. The transplant group there is great although the hospital paperwork/admin system has some improvements to be made. It drove me crazy post transplant to have to go to the third floor to get blood work paperwork which sometimes wasn't ready, go back to the first floor to get bloodwork to then go back to the 3rd floor for your checkup appointment. The first couple of weeks after your released from the hospital is tiring at best. I never could figure out why they couldn't send the paperwork to the lab ahead of time but maybe it is a ploy to make sure you get your exercise in . We got it down to a system where I'd be let out at the main entrance and head to the lab, my husband or whoever was with me would park on the 3rd floor of the parking garage, use the bridge walkway, get the paperwork, meet me at the lab, then we'd go up to the 3rd floor for the appt. It may sound trivial now but getting around those first several weeks is exhausting. You're encouraged to walk as soon as possible. I think the babies are on the second floor if you're up for an extended venture. It is more interesting and uplifting then looping around the 3rd floor. Also, don't get discouraged with your mental faculties right afterward. I remember being so frustrated trying to remember what medication and when to take it. It seemed like it should be a simple process to use the checklist but I can remember feeling like it was overwhelming since some medication should be spaced away from other medication. Then there is the shakes from the prograf and prednisone but they settle out. I think some of it might have been the anethesia and the body adjustment to all the medication and changes but I do remember how much better, non jaundiced, I looked the day after the transplant. Hang in there... it is great not to have the itchys and knock down fatigue. I'm sure things will go great. I had , Gordan, and/or Ravi at one time or the other and they are all good. Ravi always seem to get the task of delivering the bad news - 1st the donor liver wasn't good, then the first transplanted liver was failing but along with Raiford, you couldn't ask for a better group of DRs. I'd say your in excelent hands. Cinda

Guest guest
Can any of you that had your tx as a teen or 20 something tell me if you got a case of the stupids after? had his tx 2 years ago and is away at college. Last semester he did OK after some nagging but he has destroyed this one. If he does not pull his head out he may not be able to go back next fall. That will mean he falls off my insurance. He tells me not to bug him but he seems to be oblivious to adult responsibility. Help.!! My husband wants to let him fail and get his own place but there is that little problem with no health insurance and therefore no meds that makes that problematic.
