Guest guest
Thanks everybody for your suggestions. I put calls in to my pulomnary and emailed the nurse practicioner. Waiting to hear from them. --with the 2 Helios's, does the liquid o2 in the second one evaporate before you get to use it? Bruce--the Marathon is heavier than the Helios. However, i think i will need a marathon in the near future because of a increase in the lpm. Right now i use 4 lpm when active. If it goes any higher the helios won't be enough. Guest guest
Pink Joyce Yes, the Marathon weighs 3.6 lbs empty vs. 2.7 lbs for the Plus. However, full, because of more oxygen, it weighs 5.6 lbs while the Plus weighs 3.6. It lasts about over twice as long as it holds 685 liters versus 308 liters. Interestingly, the Marathon actually has slightly less loss due to evaporation than the Plus. In answer to your evaporation question, the Helios plus holds 0.9 lbs of oxygen and normal evaporation is 1.0 lbs per day with a maximum of 1.5. So, normal evaporation would be in just under 22 hours. So, in 6 hours, for instance, just over 1/4 of its contents would evaporate. > > Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Guest guest
Pink, There may be a bit of evaporation from the second Helios Plus, but I get about 4+ hours from the first one and usually I'm home by the time the second one is empty. Usually I can get a total of 7+ hours with both of them. I agree that the larger Helios Marathon is heavier, but when I need more than 4 lpm.. I'll gladly take the trade- off from the lighter Plus model and stay as active as possible outside of the house. Getting out on a regular basis, to visit the kids, shop, go out to dinner keeps me like the "old" me. I need the contact with life outside of my house. Guest guest
Pink/ One thing that really helps my range on the Marathon and applies to any equipment is making sure I adjust the flow down when conditions allow for it. Even on days of activity, you'll be amazed at how little of that time you're actually active. Think of going out to dinner. Well, the walk to the car, the walk into the restaurant, a trip to the restroom, the walk out, the walk back into the house. The rest of the time you're sitting. I turn down but check my oximeter and never jeopardize my health by turning down too much. I don't find the Marathon that much worse to carry than the Plus. Now, I have used the step beyond that, the Companion 1000. I find it less convenient because of weight, the lack of a carrying case, and the weird shape which means there is no back to lay it on so has to be upright only. However, Gwynne use to haul two of those in her bag she carried so when my time comes I'll find a way with those two. I did use a Companion on one trip and it wasn't too bad. As to getting out, I've committed to myself to get out and except for bad weather (or if I was sick) I try to at least get out and go somewhere every day, even if just to the convenience store or post office or something. I intend to stick with that as long as I can. When it becomes every other day is the most I can handle, then I'll do that. I have to avoid my natural inclination to being perfectly happy at home in my apartment. > > > Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Guest guest
In my trunk usually is 4 E tanks, one laying in the floorboard (that stays at all times) We have taken a few trips and have no problem. Don't be scured.  Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida,  IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet, when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." /Peggy ... I'll add Amen to that! MamaSher, age 70. My co actually told me the same thing. then one day talking to a lady about supplies I needed she said "If we get a script from your Dr. we have to fill it."So they brought me m6, E tanks and liquid at one time but I didn't really like the liquid.I use E tanks. they last me a little over an hour so we always take a trunk full when we go out.Talk to your Dr. would be my advise.Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida, IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angelswho lift us to our feet, when our wingshave trouble remembering how to fly."Hi Groupthe following note is what I sent to the nurse at my pulmonary doc's office. I hope the note is self explanatory.I am wondering if anyone else has a similar situation. If so, what has your experience been?I look forward to your answers. Thanks.Pink JoyceHi JenThis is about oxygen equipment. I have a Helios and a liquid O2 tank. I also have a concentrator to use in the house. In addition, I have those little green tanks, I think they are M6's. I use them to hold me over when the Helios freezes and when I am going to be out of the house for a long period of time and the Helios runs out.For example, last Saturday I went to the ball game. After the Helios ran out, I used 2 or 3 green tanks until I got home. When using O2, I use 2 liters at rest and 4 liters when active, i.e.: walking the dog, exercise, walking anyplace.I just called the O2 company, Lincare, and requested the little green tanks to hold me over for the weekend. Elaine said that the insurance will only cover either the liquid O2 or the green tanks, not both. Then she said that I would have to pay $10 per green tank if I want both.So I called Blue Cross, they said that I need prior authorization from my doctor to cover something that is a medical necessity. So I called, got a busy signal and will try again. To summarize, the Helios is only good for for 3 to 4 hours, if I am away from the house for a longer period of time, I need something to supplement the Helios.PinkJoyceIPF 3/06Pennslvania
