Guest guest
April 4, 2007 New License Plates Promote Organ Donation COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio has more than 130 specialty license plates, and another was added to promote organ donations. Donor groups said it was the start of an ambitious plan to dramatically increase registered donors. About half of Ohio drivers chose to list themselves now as possible donor, but donor organizations believe numbers would be higher if more people heard the stories about what happened when an organ was donated. " We knew that he felt organ donations were a good thing, " said Nina Frederick, whose son was an organ donor. Frederick lost her son in a Columbus car accident. The 20-year-old had signed up to be an organ donor. About half of Ohio's registered drivers are already on the donor list and more than 2,500 people in Ohio are waiting for a lifesaving organ. The Fredericks said they are glad their son chose to donate his organs. They said they have talked to the four people who received their son's organs, and when they met the person who received his heart, they were able to hear 's heartbeat. Donor groups are aiming for another 800 drivers to sign up to become a donor in the year or two. They said the plates will give them publicity and part of the plate fee will go to an education fund.
