Guest guest
Judging by what I know about this disease, I'm wondering whether eating any extremely high-fat meals would cause any pain (or abnormally high short-term liver damage)? Does anyone (not on Urso) have any unusual pains after eating high fat meals? I would imagine that more bile is required to breakdown food with larger levels of fat. With PSC causing duct dilation, it seems that the levels of bile being generated (and then restricted) in the liver would increase as well. Thoughts? Guest guest
-----Original Message----- Does anyone (not on Urso) have any unusual pains after eating high fat meals? My son is not on URSO and does have pain after eating a high fat meal. Last weekend he went with us out to eat and he ate fried catfish, fries, hush puppies, a piece of fried chicken and cinnamon/apple fries. The next day he told me “never again”! He was up all night with cramping and diarrhea. I was a good mom and didn’t say; told ya so (but wanted to). HTH Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight, Whatever it Takes! Haven't posted in a while, but popped in and caught your question. My son (12yo) is not on URSO (yet) and gets upper abdominal cramping like crazy if he's had a fat-laden meal. Before diagnosis when this happened, we thought he was getting gas pains --he'd be up late into the night miserable while one or both of us sat up with him 'til it passed. After dx, I read or heard somewhere (can't remember where.. sorry) that a high-fat meal can be taxing on the liver and cause abdominal pains in digestion. We realized that his 'episodes' in the yr prior had to be due to that. Butter seems to be our son's worst offender. We never cook in butter at home (have cooked in olive or canola oil for yrs now) or 'fatten up' home-cooked meals, but our son's cramping episodes always happened after we'd eaten out. Since dx, he's only had one 'episode' where we didn't catch the buttery, fatty meal- prep in time while eating out (at the hotel the conference was held at, ironically ---our son's first night/morning there was miserable, b/c of it unfortunately). If I can pinch the time, I'll look back over my saved internet favorites on PSC and see if that's where I heard about the upper abdominal pains in digesting a fatty meal. Sorry, I can't remember it off-hand. --Meghan, mom to Wyatt (12yo: UC & PSC 1/07: FAP 8/01)

Guest guest
Not pains, but I certainly regret it later (call it a fast transit). I no longer have a gallbladder, so that's probably the reason. If I keep fat gms around 30-40, I'm fine. Note that a Culver's milkshake is about 30 gms by itself (and 800 calories!). Arne
