dollars in sales by focusing on them.

Rare diseases were long relegated to the backwaters of

the drug business, targeted by tiny biotech companies, if at all, and often

ignored by drug giants in their search for billion-dollar franchises. But Novartis is in pitched pursuit of some of the more obscure

maladies in the world.
