Guest guest
>Liz -- the first (and only indication) that I had that anything was amiss was that my cholesterol shot up quite suddenly -- even though I was being even more careful about my diet. Then came the surprise diagnosis of PSC. My cholesterol is still a bit higher than it used to be (now it's 207), but the " good " is very good and the rest good enough for my doctor to leave well enough alone. Guest guest
's cholesterol levels were the same way (I don't remember the numbers, but the one was definitely too low, the other was too high). They haven't put him on meds, but he IS only 9, so that might be why. Amielizabeth wrote: Hi all -I understand that with PSC you can get high cholesterol - even eating well and exercising. My HDL is 34 (should be above 40) and my LDL is 258 (should be below 130). My cholesterol was perfect 3 years ago, so obviously this is due to my PSC. My GI was reluctant to give me anything, but we're trying Zetia for two weeks and then will take blood tests to see if it is affecting my liver numbers. I just started taking omega 3 fish oils about a week ago. Do most people with PSC and high cholesterol go on meds for the cholesterol or do you or your docs think the risks outweigh the benefits? I'm not sure if I should take the medication for high cholesterol. Should the Zetia work or will it not b/c this is due to my liver? I don't want to tax my liver, but don't want hardening of the arteries, etc. BTW, don't know if this matters (as far as cholesterol goes) but my enzymes and Billi keep increasing. Bili at 5.3 and not budging except up. I have done a search on this site, but did't get a lot of answers i I was looking for. Hope someone can shed some light/insight on this. Thanks so much in advance!Liz Macchio PSC 2004 Ami mom to - 9 yrs - Double Lung Tx 2/26/2006, PSC - Pre-Liver Tx, Central DI, Steroid Induced Diabetes, Hypothyroid, GERD, High BP, ADD, Anemia, Osteopenia, Gastroperesis, Varices mom to Emma - 13 yrs - Migraines stepmom to - 14 yrs - ADHD, ODD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Park yourself in front of a world of choices in alternative vehicles.Visit the Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi, Liz. At the conference in Denver, the PSC specialists who were there said high cholesterol should be treated in PSC patients just like it would be treated in everyone else. In other words, there is no evidence that Lipitor or a similar drug is more likely to cause liver problems in a PSC patient than in an average person, so the follow-up - continually following the liver function tests - should be the same. Another thign to consider, depending on your lipid profile, might be fibrates. If your I believe triglycerides are particularly high, this is a potential drug, and there are some Japanese studies on ' website suggesting that treatment with fibrates can be successful in PSC.
