Guest guest
Legislator: Bill Would Improve Organ Donation Standards POSTED: 8:11 am EDT May 14, 2007 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A local legislator is working on a bill that would give donors more of a voice. A red heart on a driver's license indicates a desire to donate organs. But Rep. Dale Folwell of Forsyth County said officials must still contact next of kin for approval. " That heart means nothing in North Carolina, " Folwell said. If the legislation is passed, the state will work with the Department of Motor Vehicles so drivers can make the organ donation distinction online. " When our son was an organ donor eight years ago next week, there were mothers and fathers of children his age who were waiting on the organs of a healthy boy like ours, " he said. The law Folwell is pushing for is called the Uniform and Anatomical Gift Act. " It standardizes organ donation so the wishes of the decedents will prevail, " Folwell said.
