Guest guest
Bruce just read your poll results. NAC is a prescription for me, not a supplement. It comes in liquid form. I need to mix 3 mls. with diet cola to "kill" the taste 3 times a day. when i was diagnosed, studies were out that showed a "cocktail" of prednisone, NAC and Immuran helped people with IPF do OK. So that's what i was prescribed. Unfortunately, when the Immuran was increased, i had a reaction, so i had to stop taking it. But the prednisone and NAC are part of my daily routine. The generic name for NAC is "mucomyst", NAC is N-acytlescysteine. (spelling?)Pink Joyce IPF 3/06 Pennslvania
Guest guest
Pink You might consider the supplement instead so you don't have to go through the torture of the liquid. I don't use it but my pulmonologist did both write a prescription and advise me of the supplement. He suggested due to taste I'd probably prefer the pill form. You can also get it in pill at compounding pharmacies but when I checked that was much more expensive. Yes, he did tell me the only thing that would help with the taste of the liquid was cola. Actually, they are now running clinical trials with NAC, both with Imuran and Prednisone and without. > > Bruce > just read your poll results. > > NAC is a prescription for me, not a supplement. > It comes in liquid form. Guest guest
Pink, Like you I am on NAC, but I do take the compounded version - 300mg twice daily. I tried the liquid and it was just too nasty, and too much work twice a day. My Dr. did the prescription for the compounded version and I get it done at a local pharmacy. With my medical plan, my copayment is $35. So, it's not cheap, but well worth the extra money for me. Guest guest
Pnk, That's what I used to have to do...but like you said, the taste is nasty! That plus the little bottles only held so much and I had to keep getting it refilled all the time. The compounded is the same thing, only the pharmacist makes it up in a solid form and puts it in a gel cap. It has to be done special, but if you can find a pharmacy that compounds medicines, it is well worth the effort. Guest guest
Bruce mixing the NAC with diet coke is no big deal for me--very easy and have been doing it since april 2006--part of my daily routine recently found out [on this board] about the compound version--not worth the extra expense to me prefer to take a prescription version over an overthe counter version from health store was surprised when i heard that it was available otc used to get 10 ml bottles with dropper--easy to deal with then got 20 ml bottles, used same dropper--still easy to deal with now have 4 ml bottles--pain in the you know what dropper does not fit will take bottle to pulmonary next week and ask for suggestions didn't know about clinical trials for nac started out with cocktail of prednisone, nac and immuran when immuran dosage increased, had a bad reaction--chills and fever, couldn't hold head up so discontinued immuran maybe that's why there is a change in my condition, was unable to continue with 1/3 of cocktailPink Joyce IPF 3/06 Pennsylvania Subject: Re: NACTo: Breathe-Support Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 10:47 AM PinkYou might consider the supplement instead so you don't have to gothrough the torture of the liquid.
