Guest guest
I think there are a couple of reasons. First, there are many highly visible survivors of breast cancer and more breast cancer patients alive. Second, there are things to do about breast cancer other than research. It can be detected early and treated. So, there can be crusades for proper exam and early detection. There can be discussions of the treatment alternatives. For that same reason we're seeing increasing attention now given to Colon Cancer. Again, early detection is the key and treatment is possible and if detected early has a high probability of success. I can't go on the view and say I was diagnosed with PF in 2002 and fortunately it was very early so I had surgery and have continued with meds and remained in remission. I can't give the viewer a feel good story out of the disease nor can I tell them how their dollars are saving lives. Note that I'm not saying any of this is right or wrong, simply part of human nature and tv land. Have you ever seen a famous celebrity haul their oxygen onto a talk show and discuss their PF? Outside of RA and maybe a little Lupus, how much attention do you see given to autoimmune diseases. I never knew about Polymyositis. I wasn't knowledgeable about Scleroderma or Sarcoidosis. See, to my knowledge, I've never known anyone with an autoimmune disease either. I think we just continue to push. There have been some legislators hit close to home by the disease and thats helped in Congress. We have educated towns as Wally did Snyder, Texas. We don't have a famous survivor or patient appearing on tv. We don't have J. Fox raising millions as he did for Parkinson's. Nor, do we have Cook, winning American Idol, but along the way raising millions for Cancer. For those famous who want to keep their lives private, I understand and don't criticize them for it. I do, however, hope that if I was famous and did have the power to get on tv and talk shows, knowing I wasn't likely to help myself, I would think of those to get this disease in the future and use my celebrity status to help in that way. > > > > > > > Now " The View " is on doing its segment on Breast Cancer and Robin > > just came on. > > Thanks for listening. > > Pink Joyce IPF 3/06 Pennslvania > > > > > > > > Brett Bowser > brett@... >
