Guest guest
Arne and others, Thanks for your information on the J-Pouch. I have done a lot of reading since then. I also got the biopsy results on Thurs. and it is confirmed that the lesion is malignant. I will be meeting with the surgeon on Wed. to talk about my options. Of course he will want to take out the entire colon. I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I understand their side of the theory that taking out the entire colon is the best way to prevent any cancer returning. However, if I don't have any other signs in other parts of the colon why not just cut out the affected part plus a few more inches. Thanks again for the comments. Larry, I’m so sorry to hear about the lesion. It just makes me so damn mad, you are one of the nicest men around, and it’s just not fair. I readily acknowledge I don’t know much about colon cancer……but please, please, reconsider and remove the entire colon, your doctors are right, why take a chance? Get rid of it, I sure wish my dad had…… Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight, Whatever it Takes! Guest guest
I agree... Larry, I hope you will consider the complete solution also. You dont want them doing repeated surgery over and over (resections). I have Crohns and that is the nightmare some of us with this disease face. Guest guest
Larry, I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties. I don’t know the answer to why not cut part of the colon and not the whole colon and am curious to find out what the doctor says. My guess is that it is like breast cancer nowadays – sometimes they will suggest for preventative reasons to cut out much more than just the tumor. You have heard on here, and I am sure read elsewhere the great successes of j-pouches. My daughter Suzanne (18) just had her surgery in February and is healthier now than she has been for two years. The surgery was extremely successful and I must say her recovery was phenomenal (aside from some quick re-hospitalizations shortly after the surgery). I can tell you also about my father-in-law who was dx with colon cancer when Suzanne was a little tyke. They told him that he had to have his colon removed and that his prognosis was not good. I remember him crying saying he would never get to see Suzanne go to Kindergarten. His surgery was successful (no j-pouch though) and years later the cancer returned in his liver. Again, surgery – again, successful. He now is hosting Suzanne’s graduation party (from high school). My Mom also just recently had a lobectomy (lung surgery) because of surgery – she’s doing great and on her last (fingers crossed) round of chemo. So, I know there are wonderful success stories out there. However, I know the fears and worries that precede a decision such as yours and I wish I could say something that would calm those unsettling thoughts and feelings. I cried, read, cried, talked, read, cried . . . and now I am so thankful that it is all behind us and the success is what it is. Do what you need to find the pseudo-peace of mind to make your decision, the real peace will come after a decision is made and this is in the past for you. I would be happy to talk to you if that would help, just email me privately. Know that there are many caring people who are thinking and praying for you.
