Guest guest
I just joined this group and I'm so happy to back into the communication mode with other parents of CI children. My name is Sandy & I live in Northwest MS. My daughter, , has been a CI user since January 1998 when she was only 2-1/2 years old and had lost her hearing to Meningitis; she is almost 11 now. I'm interested in communicating with other parents of children that have gone through or are now going through the pre-adolescent years with their CI child. Basically, right now I just wanted to introduce myself & get mine & 's name out here. I also want to help other parents when I can with their questions & concerns. Also, I just discovered that we have a " Database " here in our group (located on the Yahoo Group main page of Listen-Up). I think this is such a handy reference for all of us to be able to get to know each other at a glance; so I would encourage all of you that are interested in it to add yourself too. Thank you, Sandy
Guest guest
Hi and welcome Sandy, I don't have a child with a CI but have been through the pre-adolescent years and some of the adolescent years with a hearing aid wearing daughter. When Maggie got to 7th grade she refused to use her FM anymore. It was absolutely crucial before then - she would have never made it through elementary school without it. We told her if she didn't keep her grades up she'd have to use it. Grades have stayed up! Now at 14 she is very interested in hearing aids that are less obvious so we are in the process of trialing some open fitting aids. You do have to pick your battles! I've been trying to entice her with a bluetooth module to connect her cell phone with her hearing aids - which also could be used like an FM in school. She's initially very resistant (to the idea of using it in school) but we're continuing to work with her on that front. She also has developed a dislike for the audiologist we were seeing so we are changing audis back to the first one we went to. She is my 3rd daughter, and I can tell you the adolescent years can be a roller coaster, my hearing 19 year old daughter went through puberty at 10, and is still acting like a 13 yr old! She is wearing us out! We'll be dealing with teaching Maggie to drive come August when she turns 15. in GA
