Just wanted to share this with people who would understand...

We just drove 8 hrs to get to Pittsburgh to go to this conference. I walked

into the convention hall and saw all these kids with hearing aids, and all the

vendors with little trinkets for the kids, water bottles, stuffed otters, that

kind of thing, saw all the products that we either have or want information

about, saw all these lively, happy, laughing kids with their families, all these

people who want to make a difference in kids' lives, and I just started crying.

I couldn't even talk to anyone, I just stood there taking it all in and

thinking, God, there's finally hope.

I have felt so alone with all of this stuff, no one even understands the

language, it is very isolating, and now I feel, even if only for three days, I

am in a world that understands.

I had to leave Bobby home, it is a long drive and he's havin fun with his

siblings, but I miss him and I just wish he were here to see all of this.

Probably wouldn't mean much to him, but for me, I feel like there's finally

help. I don't care what it takes, I am going to get him the help he needs.

Ever feel like that? That you're on a different planet?

I'm so glad have all of you guys...

Trish, mom to 6 yr old Bobby who is pretty newly diagnosed (Oct) mod/severe in

one ear, high freq in the other.

Trish, I had the same response the first time I went. And this year, I decided

not to go, and still wished I could have just for the terrific feeling of being

there in the midst of it all. Maggie's favorite part was always the exhibit

hall - loves those trinkets. The last time we went it was in St. Louis and she

sat next to the guy from Dry and Store on the plane. (She was coming from

Florida, I was coming from Minneapolis) She saw the logo on his laptop and

struck up a conversation with him and showed him her hearing aids etc.

The first time, both Maggie and I went. She was only 41/2. She didn't want to

do any of the kids activities. And didn't want to sit in sessions either. Her

sole purpose (in her mind) was to meet Miss America - Whitestone. We

met her in the hall our first night there and Maggie was ready to get on the

plane and go back home! So the next time, I didn't take her. But she went at

age 8 and 10 and had a ball in the kids program. (PS we are off to try

the " open fitting " MicroPower by Phonak this afternoon!)

Hey ,

You can get some info about upcoming events happening nationally on AG

Bell's website.

Unfortunately, the web site for AG Bell-Florida has not been updated in

a long time :-( .

There is a AG Bell state convention coming in the spring, but no details

have been posted yet.

You can also try contacting, Mark , the Training Specialist at the

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind.

He sends out emails of events going on around the state. His email

address is keithm@....

I'm not sure where you are in FL, but in the Orlando area there are two

support groups that I know of:

Hearing Me - The coordinator is , with the Orlando

Early Steps. Her number is , ext 2199. Her email address is

tanya.williams@...

and

A cochlear implant support group. Virgi Mills runs

that group. Her email is virgihears111@.... Her phone number is

.

So far we've been to one meeting with the cochlear group which was fun,

but unfortunately there were mostly adults there. We haven't tried the

" Hearing Me " group. I don't think that they are meeting over the summer.

Good luck and God Bless.
