Guest guest
Yes my fiance gets an extreme amount of relief from itching when she has been 'sunning'.
Guest guest
itching is caused by bile backing up into the bloodstream and the bile salts depositing under the skins surface near nerves and it irritates them and causes the itching. The only way to get these to break down to be eliminated from the body is thru UV light.....so, yes, I am a firm believer that the sunshine and/or tanning booths helps reduce the itching. Guest guest
When my son had jaundice as a newborn he was under the bili lights and when I took him home they asked me to lay him down in the sun everyday.I forget for how long, but the gist of it was to help with the jaundice. So it makes sense that the time in the sun might help ,LeeIs there any evidence that exposure to the sun reduces itching? The last two holidays I have had have resulted in absolutely NO itching after the 2nd day which lasts for a good couple of weeks after I get home. Has anyone else found this, or is it just a coincidence?
Guest guest
Kym, There definitely is a treatment for pruritus using UV light. I do not suffer from the itch yet, so I don't have personal experience with it, but several people on this group have discussed the UV therapy and how happy they were with it. However, I dont think our beleaguered NHS would stretch to prescribing foreign holidays every few weeks.....;O) I would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced similar? Guest guest
I am a huge advocate of suntanning right now. I have always been very careful about the sun, but this past fall I started UV light therapy treatments at my hospital and the relief from itching was unbelievable. This summer, I have been making a point of getting sun without sunscreen during some point of each day. I saw my GI last week and he asked what I was doing differently as my LFT's had improved quite a bit. a PSC '2003 Itching/sunshine Is there any evidence that exposure to the sun reduces itching? Guest guest
There was a previous discussion where someone said they were receiving UV light treatments to achieve the same thing. They were having it done at a university hospital I believe. However, after my vacation south in the spring, I have to say I noticed a reduction in itching as well. If you ask me, as much as a trip is the more costly of the two options, it certainly is more exciting.
Guest guest
WOW- thanks everyone who got back to me regarding this topic. The itching is still absent [touch wood!!] and I have been able to come off all of my 'itching' meds which is great. I would certainly much prefer a sun-bed or two to bucket loads of pills! Thanks again everyone! Kym
