Guest guest
Just wanted to give a quick introduction to the group. I've been lurking since 12/06 when I was diagnosed with PSC. I am 26 years old, live in Seattle, WA, and work for Boeing as a Software Engineer. In '92-'93 I was diagnosed with Chrohn's disease and Autoimmune Hepatitis at 12 years old. I was put on medication and life returned to normal. In fact it was so normal that I stopped taking my medication when I started college ('99) and I continued to stay in remission. Flash forward to September 2006 when I had my second flare of colitis. I didn't realize it was colitis at the time and thought I had food poisoning. This continued for a couple weeks and I eventually ended up in at a gastro who did some blood work and found elevated LFT. The LFT led to an MRCP/ERCP in Nov/Dec of 2006 where a stricture was found in my common bile duct and later opened during ERCP. The ERCP revealed intra/extra hepatic strictures but no other major blockages. The doctor feels my disease is in an early stage and has not done a liver biopsy b/c it won't change anything at this time. Right now I am asymptomatic and my colitis is under control. Medications: Urso Forte 1500mg/day, Entocort 3mg, Ceftin 1000mg day. Supplements: Coromega Fish Oil (highly recommended www.coromega.com), daily vitamin, calcium. This diagnosis has been a signal to start taking better care of myself .. I don't drink anymore with the exception of a couple beers here and there and started exercising 3-4 days a week. From what I have seen so far this is an awesome group! The wealth of information has shed some light on what others have gone through and what I can expect down the road. When I was first diagnosed I thought I would be gone in 5 years but the members here give a much more realistic perspective on the future. Thanks, #2 in Seattle P.S: Sorry for the long post. Guest guest
, I think there are a lot of parents of younger children who can take some hope from your 14 years with PSC and AIH. It sounds like you are really taking charge of your care and your health. There is a study out there suggesting that alcohol may increase the risk of cholangiocarcinoma, though I don't have it to hand. But keeping that in mind, think about whether that beer is worth it. It also took me a long time to completely eliminate alcohol rather than drinking very moderately, but I eventually decided the risk wasn't worth it. Urso may also reduce the risk of colon cancer, and there is a trend in one study suggesting it may reduce the risk of cholangiocarcinoma. Have a look at the high dose URSO files in the files section on yahoo. You may want to consider raising your dose to 30 mg/kg/day. You only get one chance at this, unfortunately, so I decided to go with the positive trends rather than waiting for absolute proof. But I get my URSO on my health plan, so it's easier to suport my habit!
