Guest guest
Dave maybe you need more fluids and maybe some of the meds you are on are making your urine dark. Did you have a catheter in your bladder during surgery?
Guest guest
Dave, my urine was very very dark after surgery and it smelled awful almost like medicine. It lasted for a week or two and then it was normal. Liz
Guest guest
Well I am now a post-op. I think it would be beneficial to share my experience with those who are considering or are soon to have the procedure. I will try to be completely accurate and honest in every detail that I relate, but I am not saying that my experience is exactly what you should expect. Everbody is different. Everything went quite well so I won't bore you with the preliminaries. Day 1 Post-op: Woke up feeling way woozy and confused with a lot of gas built up in my stomach area. My back hurt a bit from lying flat for as long as I did (but that is a problem I have always had and you probably will not). I asked to be allowed to sit up and the nurse came immediately to free my legs. She was great--they were all great. As soon I sat up I became nauseous and vomited most of the blood that was on my stomach. Later I vomited the rest, but from that point until now I have experienced no nausea. I bled a little from my incisions and they were immediately cleaned and re-dressed, but the gown will have to be burned I think. I was out in and out of it for most of the daytime hours between 10:00 when I woke up, to about 5:00 or 6:00 that evening. Finally I slept for almost an hour and was so greatful for it I cannot express it it words. I would not expect to get much sleep in the hospital unless you served in the military or something. The noise level is quite high and there was rarley a moment when I was not conscious of gas pain. From 6:00pm Friday afternoon I walked the halls every hour on the hour, until about 4:00 or 5:00 Saturday morning. The gas was persisitent but I was getting better every minute it seemed. Day 2 Post-Op: By 10:00 the next day 100% better. I was still far from frisky but much, much better. We left the hospital around noon and arrived home about 3:30. Then I went to get my prescriptions filled. Even with a $10.00 copay I spent nearly $100.00. But hey, that really is not so much in the scheme of things. I was tired by 5:00pm Saturday and could barley stay awake. I struggled because I was afraid I would sleep too much and get a head ache for which aspirin is out of the question. At 9:00pm I just gave up. I had that " so tired I feel feverish " feeling. Woke up once at 12:30am and again at 4:00am for a few minutes. Took a sip of gatorade and went back to sleep untill 9:30 Sunday. You would be amazed at how much better you can sleep without the ruckous of a hospital going on outside your always partially opened door. This is not pretty but it may save you some embarassment. My first BM brought with a great deal of relief from gas pains, but it also came unexpectedly and suddenly--'nough said. Just make sure you are close to a toilet for a week or so. The diarreha phase is supposed to pass (no pun intended) in about 7-10 days. Day 3 Post-Op: Amazing how much better I feel. On Friday I was miserable enough to begin wondering if I had done the right thing. By Saturday I put all doubts behind me and today I can barely recall the sensation of being miserable at all. I know I was because I said so, but judging by how well I feel today its hard to believe. I have only one concern and that is the darkness of my urine. This my well pass in time, but I am a little concerned there may be some blood in it. I emailed Dr. R about this concerned and expect a reply at any time. Other than that I am ready to rock and roll. By the way, the carafate was not too bad for me. I do not look forward to taking for the next month or so--but it really is not too much to stand. Guest guest
Dave, so good to see you doing so well. How long are you taking until you go back to work? And the dark urine just might be from not drinking as much fluid as you did before surgery. Heed everyone who's been post op and sip, sip, sip. If I've seen that written once, I've seen it a million times. Do you get your staples out this Saturday, or are you having them taken out by your PCP another date? Keep us posted, sounds like you're doing fine. :-) fg At 04:59 PM 04/17/2000 -0000, you wrote: >Well I am now a post-op. Guest guest
Hope you are right about the dark urine. While I am " sip, sip sipping " away I undersatnd that I may not be sipping as much now as I will later. The fact is that I was once quite a water drinker (usually in access of 8 glasses per day) have you ever heard anyone else with this complaint? I planned to go back to work next Monday, but found out the place will be closed until Tuesday. I do plan to call my PCP and ask him to remove the satples on Friday. If, for some reason, he is unable to do so than I suppose I will come to Raleigh next Saturday. Have a great day FG, Dave in NC > Dave, so good to see you doing so well. Guest guest
Well I'm sure you won't complain about the extra day off. :-)) I would think that you are just not getting the fluid load you're used to. Actually you avid water drinkers don't realize that urine is actually " yellow " in the normal individual. LOL! I always thought that if you drank enough water so when you peed you couldn't see it in the toilet, it was too dilute. LOL And you're prolly cleaning more waste products out of your body after surgery. Once you get " normalized " and if the urine is still dark, then it might be a good idea to have a urinalysis to make sure everything is okay. Let us know how your first weigh in when you get the stitches out goes. :-) Great to see you doing so well. Have you been handling the new diet, or are you hungry? Been doing the smoothy thang, or have you been drinking boost, juices, gatorade, etc? fg At 01:28 PM 04/18/2000 -0000, you wrote: >Hope you are right about the dark urine.
