rennadine?

I have a 7 month old girl who has been diagnosed at 3months. She has

been doing awesome. However, the doctor has suggested the use of

rennadine(I think this is the spelling) because they think she might

be experiencing the reflux. She doesn't spit up at all and doesn't

seem to be experiencing any discomfort that would lead me to believe

she has some acid indigestion. But because she has been having some

erratic nightime sleep patterns in the past week, the doctor is

attributing it to this reflux. I think it it her teething that is

causing her to feel this way. I would like to hear some responses

about this antacid(it's side effects etc.)and if there are any

alternatives. My husband and I have elected to use alternative

medicines as well as the western medicine to treat this disease. I

look forward to any suggestions.

Hi ,

welcome to the group! It was a special pleasure for me to see your

subscription because ... drum roll ... the list now has 500 members!!

I am from Germany and the frequent use of Antacids is one of the big

differences in CF treatment here and there. I have hardly heard of

any child here taking it and it seems to be part of the standard

treatment in the US.

What about eating raw carrots or other vegetables, that contribute to

a less acidic environment? I think our kids have to take so many

meds, that I would be happy with anyone that I could leave out

without disadvantage. We have some kids with bad reflux here on the

list, so maybe by comparing notes you can see, how big the problems

are with your daughter.

Peace

Ya know I have 3 girls and two of my girls have CF and the two that have CF

they are both light sleepers I wonder it there is something to the reflex.

They have never said anything to be but they are the ones that come in our

bed at night when the wind blows or it raining or anything that might make a

little noise in the night they hear it. Just that this might have something

to do with the reflex. Deb A

Hello and welcome ,

I guess you are speaking about ranitidine which brand name is Zantac.

I also have the impression that your baby daughter doesn't have GER

(gastroesophageal reflux).

You may want to check the list hereunder that lists GER symptoms in babies :

How do I know if my baby has GER?

Clues that your baby suffers from GER enough to need treatment are:

a.. Frequent spitting up or vomiting (not all babies with GER spit up)

b.. Baby isn't outgrowing the " colic " and/or spitting up

c.. Frequent blasts of crying that are painful cries, not just baby cries

d.. Your gut feeling tells you that your baby " hurts somewhere "

e.. Bursts of nightwaking " as if in pain "

f.. Colicky, abdominal pain after eating, even as long as one hour

afterwards

g.. Poor sleep habits, restless

h.. Writhing as if in pain: drawing up legs, arching back

i.. Erratic feeding patterns. Refuses to feed or wants to breast or

bottlefeed all the time.

j.. Frequent " wet burps " or " wet hiccups "

k.. Throaty noises: swallowing noises, choking, gagging

l.. Frequent, unexplained colds, wheezing, and chest infections

m.. Stop-breathing episodes

n.. Excessive drooling

o.. Spits up like a " volcano "

I hope this helps. When my son was a baby he REALLY had a severe GER. He

threw up every single bottle

he drank. Ranitidine didn't even help. We just switched his formula to a

special Anti reflux one.

I have found that tot everyone child necessarily fits into the norm

pattern of behavior. My daughter was diagnosed with acid reflux and at

the time, the single indication that she had a problem was that she

didn't like to eat. She had absolutely none of these other symptoms. No

vomiting, no crankiness, nothing. She just slowly stopped eating and

eventually stopped altogether (she was already on Zantac at that point).

She finally had have a gastric emptying study or milk scan as it is

sometimes called which did in fact indicate reflux. However, this was

after practically begging her doctors to do this. We eventually switched

doctors due to their lack of really trying to address the problem and

attibuting much of it to the fact that I was stressing her out at meal

times. Reflux can present itself in a variety of different ways.

It's been over a year since she started decreasing her eating. She now

vomits quite regularly. I can't get her to stop at this point. It's

actually driving me bonkers at the moment. I had to change her clothes

three separate times yesterday and then she even threw up in her crib in

the middle of the night. She is now averaging two to three times a day

(the whole meal each time). Unfortunately, I think the vomiting at meals

is now attributable to a behavioral problem. If she gets anything

slightly chunky in her mouth, she will vomit. She is on Prilosec but it

doesn't seem to help much. Anyway, she now has the typical signs but

initially and for about six or seven months the only sign was a

decreased/non-existent appetite. She was hospitalized at that point for

not eating or drinking and placed on the Prilosec, when she finally

started really eating again was when we started seeing vomiting.

Traci took Reglan for awhile for reflux. It was a real pain to give because

you had to give it an hour BEFORE she ate or 2 hours AFTER she ate and I

always forgot, or she wouldn'r eat when I scheduled her. She finally just

seemed to grow out of it when she became more mobile.

Hello,

Just like you said Torsten, in Holland we do not take medicines for reflux

as a standard. It is used however, if the doctor thinks that the Creon is

not digested properly and does not do the work it should do.

Furthermore Gwendolynn just got her B certificate in swimming. We are very

proud of her doing that. She got her Easter figures from school and she

became the best of her class. This is a bit extraordinary because she

skipped a class already. She is doing very good healthwise and we had a

pretty relaxed winter.

Best regards,

Tine Zwaan, mother of Gwendolynn Wijker 8yowcf.

Hi Torsten

Thank you for your reply, it is interesting to hear of the

differences in treatment from one country to the next. I am opposed

to using an antacid and would prefer to use a natural remedy. In my

investigation and as well as for my own use, I remembered that aloe

vera juice is very healing to the stomach and creates a neutral ph in

the stomach. So I am going to adminster it to my daughter, it can't

hurt.
