Sildenifil with Warfarin????

Firstl I'll apologise for not being around much except to ask questions. Still so much running round to do!

Secondly, does anyone take both Sildenifil and Warfarin (or other anticoagulant meds)?

The reason I'm asking is that since I've been on the sildenifil my INR has been dropping and today, despite being on 6mg of warfarin was 0.5! The only recent change is the sildenifil so it has to be that, but I was wondering if anyone else had found the same thing. The nurses at my anticoag clinic are a bit stumped, but I'm fairly confident that I'm the only one on their books with my collection of conditions. They've increased the warfarin again, and I have to go back in a week again.

Thanks

There is quite a bit of literature regarding possible interactions between Sildenafil and Warfarin.

http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/viagra_d04299_coumadin_d00022.html

Now not they are exaggerated when using Revatio as you are vs. Viagra because of the dosages.

Frome Revatio's website:

The safety of REVATIO is not known in patients with bleeding problems and those with stomach ulcers. If you have a condition like these, tell your doctor.

Taking vitamin K antagonists (like coumadin or warfarin) with REVATIO may increase risk of nosebleeds. Tell your doctor if you take such medicines.

http://www.revatio.com/importantSafety.aspx

I do not find anything to state that it is contraindicated as sildenafil is with nitrates. However, many sites that indicate some issues between Sildenafil and Warfarin

Now, it seems that what they are saying with you is the opposite of what I would expect. However, it could also possibly be that with a greater blood flow the labs would change. I'm sure there is much more medical literature available to the doctors and, frankly, I'd be quite disappointed if they haven't researched by the time you get back and know more. If I can find literature in 30 seconds on the internet (some of which I can't reach not being a member of medical sites), they they certainly should be able to. You might also ask them to talk directly to Pfizer and even to communicate with some centers specializing in PH or conducting trials on sildenafil for PF.

It seems that some reaction between the two isn't unexpected, but it should be manageable. Also, timing may be an issue. I would suspect one might want to space the sildenafil to not conflict with the warfarin administration since the sildenafil does go through the system very quickly. Maybe none a certain number of hours before or after. That might be something to ask them about too.

Well, maybe you should celebrate it this year. Heck, I think I'm going

to search for all celebratory events throughout the year everywhere and

start celebrating them all.

Whoops. Sorry Ze. I wasn't thinking, it is an American holiday only. Do you celebrate "a day of giving-thanks"?

Oh heck, I have enough trouble trying to remember to take my meds 3 times a day, I'll be buggered if I have to manage 4!

I was assured that it wouldn't make any difference if I took them at the same time, oh well, I'll have to work out some timings then.

Not in the same vein. We have a harvest festival, that's probably the closest, but it's not really a family get together.

Timing may not be important. Maybe the dosage adjustment or maybe

coincidence. Just make sure they research the medical literature and

find how others have adjusted. The interaction doesn't seem unique and

there should be some history out there. I also didn't read anywhere

saying not to take Revatio and Warfarin, just the possible interactions.

Sometimes doctors just have to dig a bit deeper in their research.

Oh, well I've taken the warfarin at the earliest possible time, and will take the sildenifil later as usual. That means that the warfarin falls about in the middle of the afternoon and evening doses of sildenifil. It's becoming more of a juggling act with these drugs, obviously I don't want to take them at times that are detrimental to me or to each other, but it really makes me laugh that I've had to go through a few changes with my meds recently with timings etc, and one of the big 'downsides' allegedly to having a transplant is being on meds for the rest of your life Oh, dear, that's a shame, I wouldn't want that

You're a funny warrior. Yes, when you already have to plan your day

around meds, is sort of like what is a few more. I had one period in

which I had to eat meals at precise times or miss them and it was nearly

lunch before I could eat. I had to take one med when I got

up....couldn't take another for two hours and couldn't eat until two

hours after it

I have one similar to that, residronate. At least I only have to have it once a week but I have to have it on an empty stomach and not have anything for half an hour afterwards and be upright when I take it. I take it on a saturday morning so that I can try to prop myself up in bed with a load of pillows, take the tablet and then go back to sleep! If I forget and make myself a morning cuppa before I take it, then I have to not have anything for 2 hours before I can take it! But as I said, that's only one day a week and if I really forget on the saturday, then I can take it on the sunday, same routine.

Fosamax or its generic--I set a timer for 1/2 hour, must stay erect, no food, once a week

then at the end of 1/2 hour, i take the rest of my fasting meds and wait another 1/2 hour before food

then there are the meds that i take with breakfast

the calcium is supposed to wait until 4 hours after thyroid pill, so I take that at lunch

then there are the bedtime meds, etc, etc, etcPink Joyce IPF 3/06 Pennsylvania

It was a similar routine for me when I was taking Boniva while on prednisone. Fortunately Boniva is a once monthly drug because I could count on feeling mserable the day I took it, stomach pain and nausea all day till early evening. UGH...not sure I'd ever take it again.

Thanks for letting us know about Boniva

the commercials don't say anything about those side effects once a month, at least i didn't hear them

they make it look so easy--Sally Field?

Also heard that it was snowing today in the Carolinas

Hope you are OK

Bad news up here: my girlfriend's sister just died--57 years old, cancer, I think it started in the ovaries

I feel so bad for my friend

I plan on going to see her tonight

Her sister lived in New York, so I didn't know her well, just met her a few times

Sorry i missed the chat last night, went to an Orchid Club meeting

the presentations were good, some of the members presented

it was a nice change from all of this health stuff that consumes my mindPink Joyce IPF 3/06 Pennsylvania

Yes, I'm still not comfortable with the advertisement of medications on

TV. Of course, none of them make much of the possible side effects and

some I've seen advertised have rather severe side effects.

Sorry to hear about the death of your girlfriend's sister.

Glad you went to Orchid thing. Don't let this health stuff consume your

mind. There are plenty of other things going on in life to enjoy.
