Guest guest
I've joked with my husband about carrying aroudn a flier that explains everything and handing it out to everyone that looks at us funny! I would have done the same. People NEED to be educated about it. When was banded, we also had a few people think that it was because she banged her head and/or that it was to protect her in case she fell.... jeez, that would certainly be an overprotective parent! Guest guest
My guess is that some people think it is a helmet for a child who has epilepsy. Not sure if some kids still wear them, but that used to be common practice for kids who were prone to frequent seizures to have to wear a helmet all the time. Guest guest
Actually, someone here did have a small flier printed explaining plagio and they kept copies of in their diaper bag to hand out when they went out in public. We didn't go out a lot with the band, but we never took it off either. Mostly people would come up and say that they knew someone whose baby had a band too. The fact that we decorated it made it look less medical, and it had her name on it so people would call her by name. I mostly ignored the stares, and honestly didn't mind explaining when people asked. Actually I belong to another online group of moms and my daughter's pic with the helmet was in my signature, and I got a LOT of moms who emailed me with questions about plagio - I didn't mind being able to help direct them (mostly to tell them about the boards and how wonderful the DOC Band has been) because I remember how upset I was when we first got the diagnosis, so it was nice to be able to help educate others. Good luck! Cris in Houston Mom to - 8 months DOC BAND Graduate - 7/25/06 >> Hi> I was > > > > wondering if anyone on this site lives in New york in the 5 > > boros > > > > area. Guest guest
I had a lady today in Sams ask me where she could get one. I"m not sure what she thought it was. I told her it was by perscription only. Wouldn't you love to be in her head! My baby at the time was 5 months! She obviously has not been around many babies and I guess doesn't realize they don't "run around" at 5 months. >> Hi> I was > > > wondering if anyone on this site lives in New york in the 5 > boros >> > area. Guest guest
I believe that in the Files section there are some sample flyers if you do want to make one. Our ortho gave us some business cards that Orthomerica makes that explains what the STARband is and what it is doing for our son. It even includes a before and after picture of a child. Guest guest
I too have not seen any other babies in bands, but have had a handful of moms come up to me to tell me that their baby had worn one before. I love hearing that, it's very nice! We go out every single day, and we go out to eat twice a week, I am not hiding my baby from anyone! We get looks, comments (they think he's a wrestler? Umm ok!lol) And I don't care. I will be honest, I thought I would hate it, and it made me feel sick before he got it. But, now, at 2.5 months into it, I don't even think about it anymore when we are out. It's become his little accessory for the time being and we have it painted blue and decorated with Chicago Cubs stuff. AND the best part is that his head is rounding out beautifully! >> Hi> I was > > > > > wondering if anyone on this site lives in New york in the 5 > > > boros > > > > > area.
