Guest guest
I watched this performance on America's Got Talent, and it made me burst into tears. Stern said what I was thinking: " I wish you were my dad. " (Stern's father was very critical of him when he was growing up and his mother sounds pretty Borderline.) So, watching it for the 3rd time, I show it to my BF, who just smiles and says, " Awww that's cute " and walks out, as I try to hide my tears. It reminds me that many (most?) people can see a loving moment between parent and child and have a fairly neutral reaction to it. I've seen this 10 times now, and I cry every time. When you watch it, how does it make you feel? http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqu2o4_jorge-alexa-narvaez-25-7-agt-2012-auditi\ ons-la_tv Deanna
Guest guest
My kids and I watched it Monday night. It was so sweet and very vulnerable of to say that out loud (I like the mostly sanitized on AGT!). When he said that, I thought, " he looks like he really means it. " And he looked caught off guard when the little girl asked him what happened with his dad. One more thing: it's funny you bring this particular performance up, Deanna, b/c my other thought in watching it was " I hope this little girl doesn't grow up enmeshed with her dad or as his little performing monkey. " Because that's how *I* felt with my dad. I'm sure I projected my own feelings into it. It's funny how we got something out of this one performance! ha ha!!! It was great; I hope they go far in the competition. > > I watched this performance on America's Got Talent, and it made me burst into tears. Stern said what I was thinking: " I wish you were my dad. Guest guest
Fiona, I didn't consider the possibility of enmeshment. I guess we all project our own experiences onto everything. My experience was one of being largely ignored by both parents. (Until a few years after I left the house, when my mother suddenly wanted to be my best friend.) There are many sides to Stern, and he talks about his childhood on the air. His father was very critical of him. He actually has audio of his father yelling at him that he's stupid. His mother told him endless stories when he was very little (5 or 6) about how the Nazis came and took all of his family. About how his father almost died of the yellow fever. She scared the crap out of him. What the hell was she thinking? He is in therapy 3 days a week (down from 4) and has been for at least a decade, I believe. So when he admits he's jealous of kids with nice parents, I am right there with him. > > My kids and I watched it Monday night.
