Guest guest
I ran across this odd little page - it's hard to determine whether the author is pro, anti, or just ambivalent about AA, but it has some rather silly criticisms of a few of the alternatives to AA: http://www.geocities.com/mikofeline/alky.html> Perhaps more pertinent is the link to this page, which appears to have some well thought out comments on " substance abuse treatment " : http://wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us/~btcarrol/skeptic/sat.html> ---------- http://listen.to/benbradley
Guest guest
Ben: The second link " lead " me to SkepDic.com. Pretty cool stuff there. Tons on Scientology; and I thought AA was dangerous.... Guest guest
This guys sounds ambivalent abt AA, basically he seems to like it but rejects its mythology. He would probably take to SOS or LSR with relish - maybe in one of them already. He obviously knows jack shit about Peele. An alcoholic in denial???? If that doesnt show what complete horsehit that accusation can be and the limited info it can be based on then I don't know what does. The only even remotely plausible criticism like this is " Peele is not an alcoholic and hence doesn't understand alcoholism " . In fact Peele writes about the health-giving aspects of alcohol and his difficulty in actually consuming enough to get up to the optimum consumption for most beneficial effect! Peele provides a wealth of advice on overcoming drink problems, and not drinking in the same bar is in fact a perfectly good one. Much of his work is devoted to the influence of social context of using (something unfortunately that I never got to bash out with Steve). made a very good point about an incident in her own life and that Bush video where he looks like he may have been drinking. He was at a party where ppl were drinking and having fun. He was interviewed. What's he gonna do, look like he's a funeral director on duty at someone's wedding reception? He's gonna jive with it, be sarcastic, make jokes, be flamboyant, even to maybe swigging a non- alcoholic drink in a nonchalant way. Tempting though it is, we can't really conclude anything from that video other than that Shrub appeared to be joining in with the atmosphere (and remember I'd love to think otherwise). Addicts often report the urges caused by familiar surroundings. Drinking in a different bar where you aren;t known as a lush might well make a difference, not least as a rsult of the way others treat you - note that this guy never said why Peele said it might. I think he needs treatment! ;-) > Perhaps more pertinent is the link to this page, which appears > to have some well thought out comments on " substance abuse treatment " : > http://wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us/~btcarrol/skeptic/sat.html> I didn't finish reading that, but appears to much more on target, without pussyfooting around. The other topics at that site are also interesting though not necessarily related to this list. Thank you, Ben > ---------- > http://listen.to/benbradley
