Jule,1.) Addressing your low ferritin and your too low thyroid will help to bring your sex hormones into balance. I don't know what kind of Iron you are taking but my reproductive endocrinologist tol me to take Slow-Fe, which is Ferritin - the iron which is acutally used by our body. There are other forms of Ferritn out there as well. It seems that folks whose thyroids are not functioning as they should end up with low ferritin and this can cause fatigue, hair loss, muscle and nerve pain, nail problems, puffiness and a host of other complaints. See this site for excellent info. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/2.) My low sex hormones are really meaningless to a person of your age. I am 59, and have been in menopause for a very long time. I had premature ovarian failure (early menopause - probably due to thyroid, hypothalamus malfunction)

in my 30's. My sex hormones levels were never tested (to my knowledge) before menopause- when things could have been corrected by adding hormones and thyroid meds to keep me in balance til the age of genuine menopause. Having said all that, I can tell you that in 1993 when I was 45 and no longer getting periods for a number of years, I tested at 141 estradiol and "FSH and LH elevated levels way beyond the those seen in a post menopausal woman". This from an endocrinologist. This doc suspected that I had hypothalamus malfunction and/or hypopitutarism affecting sex hormones. I began hot flashes as early as my twenties!!!! and was hyperthyroid in my early 20's.I don't have my blood work results from the early days of my battle with DV. I didn't know then that it was critical to get copies of all my records so that I could be sure what the doc was saying and what the tests were revealing were one and the

same. I do know however that after a year on Vivelle.dot .075 my estradiol levels were still ONLY 71 - and most docs like to see post meno ladies in the 90 to 100 range. I'm guessing, with such a low number as 71, my estrogen levels were probably non existant before starting the hormones. LOL - at least my Vulva thought so!!! 3.) As far as whether you could benefit from estrogen replacement, one way to determine that might be by having your blood work done during several points in your cycle to see if you are where you should be for systemic estrogen for your age group. If your doc won't cooperate, you could certainly use someplace like healthcheckusa for the bloodwork. Dr. Vliets book could probably point you in the right direction as to when to have the blood tested.Having lived with the 24/7 pain of DV, I know how much it means to get even a small reduction in that pain.

If nothing else has worked to date, perhaps you can point out to your doc that despite all the treatments you still have pain and you would like to try sytemic estrogen to see if there is some benefit to you.femifesto wrote: "It turned my DV around and started the healing process of that areafor me, and I too would be hard pressed to give it up."Hi Dusty--I recently found out that I have very low ferritin so I've startedtaking Iron to get those levels up. I am wondering what kind of hormone test results you had before youwere treated with estrogen? I had my hormones tested in the 3rd weekof my cycle, and my estrogen levels were good, in the 300s. So I'mwondering if given that I would or could still benefit from some typeof estrogen replacement? Thanks

What type of iron do you take to bring up the ferritin. I tried two (Slow-fe and Repliva) and they both upset my stomach.

Hi SherriI use Slow - fe, l/2 tab with food - every other day. It doesn't upset my stomach that way - but oddly enough, I get loose bowels from it - not constipation! Hollis, of this list, takes a ferritin that she seems to be successful with - maybe posting to her name asking what she takes would give us other choices.DustyShopper56@... wrote: What type of iron do you take to bring up the ferritin. Thanks Dusty:

I was taking Slow-fe. One a day. I only took it for 3 days, but it gave me stomach cramps. My daughter (with Crohn's) took it everyday and it didn't bother her. I'll try it every other day. Thanks.
