Guest guest
I took the IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) exam in July, and am awaiting results. The reason many women get sore is this: The problem is that babies know how to suck, but mothers need to be shown how to bring baby onto the breast in the "instinctive position," with the baby's head tilted back and the back and lower shoulder supported. The chin comes onto the breast first, so babies can open the mouth wide, the tongue comes forward and lower jaw drops and baby takes a big mouthful of breast and begins feeding properly. This way the nipple ends up in back of the mouth at the junction of the hard and soft palate, where it can't be damaged. I know this sounds much more complicated than if I showed you. I have had so much succcess helping moms who were sore and cracked get a good latch just by changing baby's position. Here's a good handout I give moms: http://www.wiessinger.baka.com/bfing/howworks/latchtalk.html This is very off-topic, but hopefully someone will find it helpful!!! I have to go clean up, as I am leading a La Leche group in my house tonight. I know La Leche League has gotten a bad rap because of a few bad apples, but they helped me so much that I became a Leader myself! That can cause a lot of irritation to the nipple butnot get the proper results. Ora Ora, I think that makes perfect sense. When nursing my first child...he kept slipping down to the 'tip' of the nipple and that is what caused it to get to the point where it cracked and bled. The baby's mouth is supposed to actually be on the 'areola' and not just the nipple. But the question is, how do you teach a baby how to nurse properly? It was so mentally and emotionally draining in my case. I tried, and tried until I could not bear the pain anymore. With my second son, it started off good. He nursed well for the first 2 days. I bought an expensive breast pump and decided I'd use that if he slipped down to the tip. Sure enough, he slipped down, I began to pump around the clock...he never could get back on the breast properly...I had a teeny-tiny milk supply...and was exhausted... ~Chelle
