Guest guest
<<it sounds like you had a classic case of Reynaud's phenomenon on your nipples (Reynaud's is basically a poor circulation problem). I'm really surprised that no lactation consultant properly diagnosed the problem. There are things you could have done for it: warm compresses right after feeding, nifedipine (medication) to restore blood flow and take away the pain. When the time comes, if you email me privately, I'll do the research and find for you an experienced smart LC if you decide you want to try again.>> Thanks, . I've not heard of that. What causes it and why would it only be in my nipples? Does it continue after breastfeeding? No on ever diagnosed what was wrong. Some LC's thought it was yeast, though my babies never had any signs. Neither my OB or my pediatrician were ANY help whatsoever. They made me feel like they could care less whether I gave my baby breastmilk or formula. I was so frustrated. And my firstborn was tongue-tied, so he literally WAS gumming me (chewing). My ped. refused to clip it, so we had to go to a pediatric facial surgeon (recommended by a LC) to get this simple procedure when he was about 2 months old. I nursed him until he was over 4 months, but it was so awful. I only made it 3 weeks with my 2nd and then pumped for 3 more. And Chelle, I know what you mean about feeling like I was being a wimp or a baby for not "sticking it out." It was like vestibulitis all over again in my breasts. Like when I got married as a virgin and couldn't have sex because it hurt. And people would act like I must be a really big baby for not being able to get past "virgin pain." But we already know that we women with V have more nerve fibers in our vestibules, right? We FEEL more there. Why couldn't that be the case in our nipples, as well? I just read over my breastfeeding vent and whew! I sure was in a mood about THAT apparently. I'm sorry for how that came out so completely negative. I'm not usually like that, but I guess it stirred up some deeply buried emotions there. Becky Catch up on fall's hot new shows on Yahoo! TV. Watch previews, get listings, and more! Guest guest
Here is a great breastfeeding website that will give you all the info you need on Raynaud's of the nipples, which is often mistaken for yeast: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipple-blanching.html My nipples were also very sensitive when I was nursing, more so than my friends' it seemed. I also have generally sensitive skin all over. I concur with your theory that if we have extra nerve fibers in the vestibule, why not everyplace else?
