Bohm-Starke N, Johannesson U, Hilliges M, Rylander E, Torebjork E J Reprod Med. 2004 Nov;49(11):888-92 OBJECTIVE: To analyze possible differences in somatosensory perception in the vestibular mucosa in healthy women associated with the use of oral contraceptives. STUDY DESIGN: Quantitative sensory tests were performed on the vestibular mucosa in 39 healthy women. Twenty women were using oral contraceptives containing 30-40 microg ethinyl estradiol combined with various progestins; 19 women with regular menstrual periods not using oral contraceptives served as controls. The testing included mechanical and heat pain thresholds and detection thresholds of warmth and cold in the anterior and posterior part of the vestibule. RESULTS: Significant lower mechanical pain thresholds were observed in both areas tested in women using oral contraceptives. The most sensitive area was the posterior vestibule in the group using oral contraceptives with a mechanical pain threshold of 72 +/- 10 ( +/-SEM) mN as compared to 161 +/- 3 mN (p < 0.01), in the controls. The result of the thermotest showed no significant differences between the groups. CONCLUSION: Oral contraceptives may induce increased sensitivity in the vestibular mucosa in healthy women and might be one contributing factor in the development of vulvar vestibulitis. Guest guest
Hey Becky I am a sufferer of Vulvadynia can you please tell me what BC stands for. Thank you greaty, DesperationChelle wrote: Becky Thorn <thorn0309 (AT) yahoo (DOT) com> wrote: >>>>>>>The PhD lady who sees me before I see my vulvar specialist every visit acknowledges that BC lowers the pain threshhold (IN THE VESTIBULE), but refuses to admit that there could be a hormonal factor in Vestibulitis. I cannot understand that! Becky Becky, I don't understand it myself. There are so many women on here that have been negatively impacted by the pill. A lot of my friends, my two sisters & mom were never able to truly tolerate it long and therefore stopped using it. This is just my opinion, but I do believe the pill can lead to vulvar pain.... I would have never used it had it not been for needing help for Endometriosis...and it truly did help the Endo pain, but I've paid a high price otherwise. Guest guest
When I told my doctor that I wanted to stop HRT, he told me that most women who are on HRT stop it after a little while because of the side effects. Ora Ora, my mom tried the pill when she was younger, but not for long. When she hit around 42 -44 she began menopause...and has had a terrible time. The docs tried her on EVERY one of the synthetic kinds of hormones...mixed and did everything and nothing ever helped. She has never tried bio-identical and to this day suffers from atrophy and other side effects of menopause. I did not understand enough back then to help her with the hormones. What kind of hormone replacement did you try? I am currently on E. & T. topically for the vulvar skin, but I'm also on a bio-identical Estrogen patch...and would not want to have to go off. It has helped me in more ways than one. The pill on the other hand...did me more harm then good. I even have reason to suspect that it affected my bones negatively... Guest guest
I did not use the HRT until after I began having vulvodynia pain. My doc wanted me to try HRT to see if it helped but it did not and made me feel like I was pregnant. Swollen painful breasts, etc. I tried two or three different kinds and they all had the same effect.
