antibiotics, yeast, good/bad bacteria, Molly

Hi Molly and everyone,

Several times, for me and my dogs, antibiotics have left my intestines in a

shambles. Once after taking Biaxin, I had trouble for six months, several

times a day. I took Lactinex, a chewable, over the counter tablet, though

the pharm has to keep it behind the counter for refrigeration. It is

lactobacillus acidophillus (gasseri) and L. bulgaricus. It's supposed to

restore your " good " bacteria. It really worked for me and for my dogs. I

recently used it again after being in hospital with my infection.

Interestingly, the 8-10 times a day IV antibiotics, (gentimycin, ampicillin,

cephalyn, flagyl -all spelled wrong), didn't seem to cause the intestinal

trouble, but afterward the oral Augmentin did. I guess maybe that's because

it had to go through the digestive tract. Then, I got to thinking, maybe

there was something to all this stuff about keeping the good bacteria strong,

so I bought some of that Health Trinity stuff, made by Natren. I've been

listening to them advertise it on the radio for years. Now I'm taking Cipro

for bladder infection and have yeast infection too from that. Fun. Anyway,

if you've read my stuff before, you'll know that I'm not big on all this

" Natural " medicine. But the Lactinex has proven itself after antibiotics

several times. By the way, it was the vet that suggested it for the dogs

when antibiotics left them with diarrehea; then when the Biaxin messed me up

I had to ask my doctor if I should take it and she said " sure, that would be

good " . Now why did I have to ask? And she was actually a very good doctor-I

wish she had been around when the angioedema started. The theory behind

taking the healthy trinity or similar supplements is that due to our food

processing, and antibiotic treatment of animals supplying our meat and milk

and eggs etc, that our modern diet is constantly upsetting the bacteria

balance. So far, about 10 days, I see no difference with the healthy trinity

except that the Cipro has not yet caused me any intestinal trouble. In the

middle of my hospital stays, I was home for one and a half days taking

Floxin, same type of stuff as Cipro, but in double the strength, and one dose

of it sent me to the bathroom-major! So, maybe the healthy trinity is

helping me right now, I just don't know. It's very expensive. It it would

help in some way in general, it would be worth the price. I'll have to be

beyond all these antibiotic treatments I've been taking for a while, before

I'll know. They make big claims, you know, a cure for allergy to back pain

to bunions (exaggerated to make point). I normally don't buy into those

sweeping claims, but figured this was a good time to try it. Maybe it could

help some of us. Who knows. I'll let you all know what I think of it in a

couple months. But, Molly, if you tested " No good bacteria " , maybe give it a

try. I don't think it can hurt. I asked the doctor I saw at the local

immediate care center, when I went in for my bladder infection, if it was ok

to keep taking it and he said it wouldn't hurt a thing. Anyone else here have

any comments?
