Melinda,

ARE you deficient in E? What are your levels?

Subject: progesterone question

Hi all, and especially the more experienced gals here...I have a

question. My doctor (not the V specialist) wants me to try bioidentical

progesterone. I asked about this before but now am really at the point

of having to make a decision.

My day 20 progesterone was REALLY low. I also tested Vitamin D and

iodine deficient. Anyway, isn't progesterone bad for us? I told her I

had heard that and she was very interested in seeing a study on it. She

said prog. is the mother hormone and that if I am deficient in E or T

it will help with that too. And that it should help regulate my crazy,

crazy cycles. Any thoughts?

Hollis,

My E level when tested 5 months ago (only at my insistence) was 69 (on

day 3). T was 24 total, 1 for free T and 2 for weakly bound.

Progesterone was only .4 on day 20. I had been using topical E daily

for several months at that point and continue to do so, and just added

topical T a few weeks ago, every other day.

Supplemental Progesterone is not good for everyone. If you were tested and you were deficient than your body needed it. Many women are not in your position and don't need it and using an OTC cream to get more into their bodies could be dangerous for them.Dustyocnstuff wrote: Melinda,I've been on bio-identical progesterone for the past 14 mths and it has been the best thing for me. I was definitely deficient in it b/c everything about my body and mind has been better since taking it. I took it in pill form for 9 mths and then I've been using a cream since then (insurance ran out and it was cheaper with the cream). The cream (1/4 tsp) gave me the same amount of P as the pill in balanced amount. What I mean is, if you take a pill, you need 10x the

amount of P than in a cream b/c it has to get through your digestive track to be used. So I had 200 mg of P in pill form and 1/4 tsp cream gives me 22 mg of P. It's just right. I wish that I would have known that my P was so messed up years ago, but I didn't know to check until it was so low that I was having a difficult time maintaining my pregnancy. My body just couldn't make enough on it's own. I started on the P to prevent despression and it helped in many other ways...ie: I've lost 54 lbs that I couldn't ever lose before (without much effort). I would give it a try and see if it helps. I just got the cream from a health foods store and you don't have to have a prescription for it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.Take care,>> Hi all, and especially the more experienced

sherri, progesterone, when withdrawn is supposed to cause vaginal bleeding so as to slough off the endomentrial lining.while adjusting to the product and the correct dosage there can be breakthough bleeding/spotting, for about 6 months or so - I believe your medicine package insert says - as you find the right dosage and your body adjusts. It is pretty normal to have the bleeding and it should be self correcting as your body adjusts or as you and your doc adjust your dose. If you are cycling with the meds - then you get a "period" when you don't take it.DustyShopper56@... wrote: Hi: I didn't have a good experience with bioidenical progesterone. It caused me to have vaginal bleeding. DHEA did the same thing. I am also low in estrogen and

testosterone. I have been using a bioidentical E & T cream since June 2006. Hi Dusty:

That's interesting. I didn't know that. The progesterone that I used was compounded at a pharmacy so there weren't any inserts.

I only used it for two days. The first time I put it on at 10pm and woke up bleeding at 7am. The second night I used half as much, but I woke up bleeding half as much as the day before. I have DV and blood burns like acid, so that was the end of the progesterone. I also bled from DHEA. But I have no problems with E & T.

Boy, i'm really doing well tonight in the pressing the

wrong key department. . . .

Anyway, Melinda --

Are you doing any non-vulvar E, T, or P? With your

low levels of each, sounds as if you could use it!

Hollis,

I can't find a doctor who will work with me on hormones - I now have

been to three who say my E and T levels are fine. One of those three is

the one that was concerned about the progresterone and thinks I should

be using that. I am seeing an endocrinologist in the new year but I

don't hold out much hope at this point, seems like everyone short of

going to see Vliet thinks those levels are fine. I don't know what else

to do. I am going to see the endo. and will use the progesterone if she

suggests it as a second opinion. I am having a lot of spotting now,

almost every day, and sometimes passing larger clot-like things. It

scares me but I can't get a dr. to take me seriously, I've called 4 for

appointments and they are all like, " spotting's not that serious, we'll

see you after the holidays " .

Melinda,

Now i remember your dilemma. . . an all too common one, i'm afraid.

What a bummer you can't find a decent MD to help you with this. :( I'm lucky in

that i have an alternatively-minded thyroid doctor (technically an ENT and

Environmental Medicine guy) who is quite willing to do basically whatever i

want. He's 3 1/2 hours away, but it's worth it. When he retires, though, which

may be fairly soon, i will be back in the same boat as you, searching for

someone. There must be SOMEONE you can work with, especially in the Boston area.

.. . .

Hollis,

I am sure there is someone around here who I can find to work with me

on this...it will just be part of my journey to find them. It took me

five doctor's and a not so great PT before I found my V specialist and

a great PT, so a great endocrinologist type person is the next big

search. =) Thanks so much for your support!
