Fibromyalgia?

I know this is slightly off-topic, but I was wondering how many women

here have fibromyalgia? I'm concerned I may have it, but I keep

reading different descriptions of the symptoms of this syndrome. All

I know is I have frequent muscle aches and fatigue, neither of which

go away no matter how much sleep I get or how much stretching/warm-up

activities I do, on top of just generally feeling sick 24/7 (on top of

other stuff, but I don't wanna go into my huge and lame medical

history up-front, lol). But some sites say a symptom is constant

excruciating pain, or that it can be on-again off-again pain...and I

just don't know what to believe, and I don't want to be a

hypochondriac and just assume I have something I don't, lol.

Thanks, and I hope everyone had a great holiday!

Hi Beth,

I have fibromyalgia as my one of many health problems and it can

create all kinds of symptoms. It has just as many atypical

symptoms as it does typical ones. One of the more common

symptoms that can occur is feeling like you have the flu every

day but it isn't the flu. Some women also describe the feeling

like as if they have been run over by a truck.

If you have other questions for me please feel free to e-mail me

off list any time.

Kristy :)

I also have Fibro. I don't feel like I have the flu every day but once in awhile I do and man, it's horrible! I do have the pain of fibro every day though and the sensitivities etc. No fun.

Hi Beth-

I had it for years and didn't know. Finally I had 3 doctors diagnose it in the same week, lol. Anytime anyone touches me it's like "Ow!" Just about every muscle in my body hurts, that's constant for me. Sometimes I don't even know they hurt until someone touches me. I also get those flu like symptoms off and on and they go away pretty quickly in a day or so but for one day I feel like I have a full blown flu.

Go to a rheumatologist or a doctor who can diagnose it for you Hun. Don't guess at it.

in my understanding fibro can be either relapsing/remitting or constant pain, but there are 11 or so "tender spots" that are usually overtender to the touch. Many specialists see a link between fibro and vulvodynia. I can tell you I have had a lot of symptoms of fibro for many years, but have tried to stay away from that diagnosis because of all of the stigma (which is really unfair). I take a lot of the same vitamins that are recommended for fibro. I think lyrica is now being advertised for fibro and I think the jury's still out on that one. I hope it does help people, but I think that really great nutrition and lots of good quality sleep can help HEAL it. There's a great book called "Pain free 1-2-3" by Jakob Teitelbaum that talks about fibro. Lindsey

I had one doctor tell me I had fibromyalgia so I went to a specialist--a

rheumatologist--

and he told me I don't have it. As I understand it, the criteria for diagnosis

is tender

points in specific areas (the exam is called " mapping " ) and symptom profile.

The second

doc I saw said that fibro patients have lots of problems with sleep--can't sleep

soundly

because of pain. That's a prominent feature of fibro and I definitely don't

have that! I

sleep really soundly for 8-10 hours at a stretch. The drug lyrica just got

approved for

fibro (I saw on TV). It's all really confusing, though. I think I have more

muscle pain than I

should, but... Fibromyalgia isn't the only possible cause of that.

Lia,

Whether someone sleeps not enough or too much is not something

that factors in to the case for every patient with fibro.

I have fibromyalgia and do not have a problem with sleeping. I

get a very good sleep at night and the pain from my fibro does

not affect my ability to sleep. If pain affects my ability to

sleep (which hasn't happened in a while) it's because of one of

my other medical problems such as my endo.

I was dx with fibro about 11 years ago and I've had some good periods and some really bad periods. When I was working retail, the aching and fatigue and weakness were so severe, I needed a cane to get around. I'm much better now, although I still have muscle pain and tenderness on a daily basis. Not being able to sleep has never been an issue for me; I may not be getting the quality of sleep I need because I don't always wake up refreshed but I can sleep just about anywhere, anytime. Fibro seems to be connected with other auto-immune problems and many of these conditions we deal with tend to go together. In my case, it's the VVD, LP, depression, migraines and fibromyalgia. I wouldn't discount fibro just because of the sleep issue. I stopped seeing my rheumy because he told me not to come back until I was walking for 15 minutes every day. At the time, I was afraid to walk 5 minutes away from my house because I would

be too tired to walk back. So I haven't been back. I see a wonderful chiropractor who respects my feelings and the condition and has me working on strengthening musles. He has excellent massage therapists who have helped me more than any other treatment has. I know how frustrating it is it battle these multiple conditions. Just don't expect more of yourself than you're able to do. http://www.fibrohugs.com/staticpages/index.php?page=20040209003840699 is a really good support site for fibromyalgia.
