Guest guest
Our ped referred us to a specialist at 4 mo. At 2 mo the problem was noticable, but she said " don't worry about it " , so we didn't - mistake. 5 mo is a great time to start with a band, although you can still try repositioning. repo is a lot of work and may or maynot correct the problem. also repo becomes more difficult after 6 mo because kids are so much more mobil. we tried it for a few weeks while waiting for the band, and I know it wouldn't have worked. sydney was always sleeping right on the back of her head. car seats, strollers etc were fine, but sleeping is such a large part of the time. we used the starband for brachy (flat in back, with no asymmetry) and it worked really well. you may also want to check out cranial technologies (www.cranialtech.com) if they are close to you. sydney started wearing her band at 5 mo, and just finished 5 mo later (her brachy was severe). I think you need to be pushy with your ped to take it seriously. at least she should refer you to a specialist familar with plagio (often cranio-facial plastic surgeon). if she refuses you can look for a band-friendly ped. good luck and let us know how it goes. christine mom to sydney/ 10 mo /starband grad 5-25-06 -- In Plagiocephaly , Raney Aronson <raneyaronson@...> wrote: > > Hi all, > > I'm new to the group, just having noticed my son's > flat spots on the back of his head about two weeks ago > (he's 5 months old today). Guest guest
Hi Raney~ You're right that your doctor's response is very common. I was extremely upset with our ped (and am still, to be honest) and felt like she had given us horrible advice until I realized that MOST pediatrician's act this way about plagio. As far as your questions: 1-how did you get your baby's pediatrician to take it seriously, and at 5 months what did people find the most effective treatment? We NEVER were able to get her to take it seriously even when I came to the office armed with studies, pictures of older children left with horrible plagio, information packets about all kinds of cranial orthotic devices, etc. She just didn't want to listen and said that she would find us someone else who did know. This sounded great until we found out that it would take weeks to get into the person she was referring us to and it was even a guarantee that he was completely educated about plagio and the current treatments. So we finally went over her head and found a doctor in our area who had published research papers on plagio through the University of Michigan. We went to see her Monday, she performed x-rays that same day to rule out premature fusion of the skull, we were in PT by Wednesday, and casted for the STARband on Thursday. We are now having issues with our ped about our " lack of trust in her care " but I don't regret what I did for a minute. I'm the only one who could stick up for him and what he needed and I would do it again if needed. 2-In terms of repositioning, how serious were those of you in limiting time in a stroller, or car seat? For safety reasons we didn't change anything about the carseat, but we did keep him out of the stroller and anything else that put pressure on his head. Instead we used a front carrier when we were out. 3-Did you feel like the STARband was helpful? I am very happy with the STARband. We started kind of late (8 months) but we've already had really good correction. The flat area has kind of " popped out " a little and it has made all the difference. He still has a ways to go, but if he never gets anymore improvement I would still be happy with it. Good luck! Guest guest
Sara, Would you mind sharing with me the name of the specialist you saw at the U-Michigan? I'm thinking that I should call and ask who is good in Manhattan since my pediatrician doesn't have a referral of someone in the city who actually specializes in this. Thanks so much, Raney --- Sara <fsvasquez@...> wrote: > Hi Raney~ > > You're right that your doctor's response is very > common.
