He's just turned 2 now and rarely uses any anymore (he has terrific verbal skills I attribute to the use of the signs) but they were terribly easy to start and use. I did get the book Baby Signs just to have an idea where/how to begin but once you start using them (anytime you feel he/she is ready & able, probably around 6-7months for us) it just takes off on it's own. Don't get discouraged, it may take awhile for it to 'click' with them but it works very well if you're consistent. We used some ASL signs but many of them he would adapt to his own use and then even begin to make up his own and teach them to us!! It's a wonderful experience to be able to communicate and understand each other even before words are being used. (although you should also use the word along with the sign each time to promote the language development). If you'd like anymore input on this subject I'd love to share some of my experiences and signs with you! BTW--Drake's self made sign for nursing was tapping his closed fingertips to my chest. It would be funny if we were in a store or somewhere where I had to finish something and it would take me a minute to get to a seat and begin nursing, he'd begin tapping harder and harder and lean over and look into my face as if to make sure I could " hear " him! Best wishes! Fawn sahm to Drake 8-18-98 and edd 3-05-
