My daughter was born 8/18/00. We are into a great breastfeeding

pattern now. After she was born, I made sure I told the nurses to

not, I mean do not, give my daughter a bottle or pacifier. I wanted

to nurse her and I only wanted her to have my nipple to learn. With

my first son, unbenounst to me, when they took him to the nursery,

they gave him a bottle of sugar water. By the time I got him home, I

had a heck of a time trying to nurse him. Well, being my first baby

and all, I didn't realize that if I kept at it, I would eventually

get him used to my nipple. And having no real support around me (my

mother nor my mother-in-law had nursed), I gave up after a week of

trying. My second son, I was more determined to stick with it. So

right after he came out, I put him on my breast. He was a very

vigorous, strong eater. When he was five months old, I had to have

major surgery and they were pumping me full of major drugs, so I had

to stop breastfeeding him. Little did I know that I could have

pumped the milk to keep my milk going and throw the milk away until I

was well enough to continue feeding him. Well, now with my third

baby and a lot wiser, I'm determined to go as long as I can with

her. We started out where she was eating every two hours, which

really was an hour because by the time I finished feeding her and

getting her to burp, an hour had already passed and she was ready to

start the process all over in another hour. Now that she is a little

older, I have stretched her to eating every three hours during the

day and she is now sleeping eight hours at night.

I have a little concern. She is only having a bowel movement once a

week. Her doctor doesn't seem concerned about it. She is gaining

weight well and when she does have a bowel movement, it's not hard;

it's still loose. I don't remember this with my other children. Is

anyone experiencing or have experienced the same thing with their

child?

Thanks,

Chele

Chele,

Some bf babies only have 1 bm per week (or less) though these are frequently

large and may overflow and require major cleanup/clothes changes/etc.

Just a note of caution, a bf baby of 2 months age needs to eat 6-8 times per

day to keep your milk supply up. If your dd is nursing less than 6 times

per day, you should decrease the time between daytime feedings so that she

does nurse 6 times at least. Also, she's coming up to another growth spurt

(3 months, approx.) and that will be easier on you both if she nurses every

two hours (but for less time).

Welcome and happy nursing,

Amy Lynn

mother to 1-25-98 (weaned at 21 months) and 2-10-00

(nursing 8-10x per day still, cause we can't touch dairy 'til a year.)

She is nursing 6 times a day and sometimes gets an extra one in there

late at night. I thought I was doing her and me justice by sticking

to every three hour schedule. I'll adjust it when she goes through

her growth spirts. But if I feed her every two hours, I feel like I

don't get anything else done and I'm just feeding her all day. I

don't mind doing that when she needs it, but I can't see myself doing

that on a regular basis.
