Guest guest
Long time; no see Ladies :-) Meaning......I've been away for awhile but the need has arisen for me to show my face again. I have this cute little 4.5 month old boy that is sooooo cranky and is soooooo clingy that I don't know what to do. He is constantly at the breast but never seems to be getting enough and I " appear " to be out of the milk all the time. I personally don't think I have enough milk to fill him up..........so........I gave him his first taste of rice cereal the other day and he took to it like a fish to water! :-) He loves it and is eager to eat it and only after he is finished eating his cereal does he NOT act like he did before......which leads me to believe that he really WAS hungry and thats the reason for his crankiness. I thought that he could/would go longer on just breast milk. :-| Why am I not appearing to be able to make enough breast milk to satisfy his hunger without the cereal? *sniff* The doctor said it was ok to start him on rice cereal anytime he was ready.......... *frustrated shrug* help???? Guest guest
How long did/has this fussieness gone on for? It sounds like he's trying to increase your supply by nursing more often (growth spurt) It's possible he is hungry, but increasing your milk supply is preferable at 4.5 mos rather than cereal (which should be held off on until 6 months) If it went on for more than a week with no relief and you nursed as much as he asked, then I say maybe the cereal is a good idea, but if was only a few days I'd say try to increase your milk by nursing on demand and as much as possible, keep up your fluid intake and relax! There are even some herbs you can take if you are interested! Guest guest
Rene, Some babies are ready for solids at 4.5 months, though it can also be the 6 month growth spurt. Clinging and crankiness go hand in hand with needing to eat more, so one way or the other. If you want to continue with solids, do the following to keep bm as ds primary, and most important food. Nurse first, both sides or one as is usual. Then, feed solids, and finally nurse again afterward if still hungry. Also, only offer solids once per day--usually evening, but whenever your milk supply " feels " the lowest. If you feel that your milk supply is dwindling, try mother's milk tea, more b-vitamins from vitamin supplement, diet, wine/home-brew beer or brewer's yeast flakes/tablet. There are also other herbals. HTH, Amy Lynn mother to 1-25-98 and 2-10-00 Want great toys? (Iowa has more of the aisle than the hfs.) Amy Lynn mother to 1-25-98 and 2-10-00 Want great toys?
