Also, you can go to her website at http://www.herplace.com If you were like me and didn't see the attachment at first, read below... ~Chelleblueeberri@... wrote: Thursday,

August 09, 2007 Bluee Berri Dr. Vliet launches Straight Truth About Hormones Campaign with her first YouTube video! Check out this 9 minute YouTube clip of Dr. Vliet's remarks about critical hormone issues facing American women. Hear Dr. Vliet speak at the Arizona Foundation for Women Awards Luncheon at which AFW recognized Dr. Vliet with their 2007 Voice of Women Award for her pioneering work on hormone connections in women's health.

In addition, Dr. Vliet also wanted you to know about this latest update on important issues with Vitamin D and selenium, based on new

research. With more recent studies showing many women are actually deficient in Vitamin D, Dr. Vliet has revised her recommendations on daily intake from 400 IU (found in many mutlivitamins) to at least 800 IU daily. Dr. Vliet also suggests that readers talk with their physicians about having vitamin D blood level checked, and if it is low, consider taking additional supplements until the desired target range is achieved. Specific values for optimal ranges should be discussed with your physician, taking into account other health issues. Vitamin D is getting lots more attention for its role in preventing cancer. Higher vitamin D levels have been linked to a lower risk of developing cancer and cancer-related mortality. Now for the first time a randomized clinical trial shows that postmenopausal women who take vitamin D (cholecalciferol) 1100 IU/day have 60% lower relative risk for developing cancer of any type. This corresponds to a number needed to treat (NNT) of 25. To prevent one occurrence of cancer, 25 postmenopausal women would need to take vitamin D for 4 years. The Canadian Cancer Society is now also recommending 1000 IU/day of vitamin D during the fall and winter months. Other organizations will also be reviewing vitamin D recommendations this fall. For now, recommend that most people get at least 400-800 IU/day from food or supplements. Suggest supplements containing vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). These are more potent than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) supplements. Selenium is now out of favor for diabetes. Oxidative stress is thought to contribute to insulin resistance. Therefore, it was thought that the antioxidant effects of selenium might help prevent diabetes. But new research links higher blood levels of selenium with a HIGHER risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A new clinical trial also shows that older people who take a selenium supplement 200 mcg/day for an average of 7 years are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Explain to patients that most people get enough selenium through dietary sources. Advise them not to overdo it with supplements. Additional information on all of these subjects can be found in Dr. Vliet's new book series, The Savvy Woman's Guides, available on Amazon and at your local bookstore or library.
