Guest guest
Mark, you have an excellent ldl/hdl ratio of 2.81 that is ldl/hdl, and anything under 3.0 is good. All your blood work looks pretty good to me.
Guest guest
Your hdl is great, but your ldl is pretty high. I would think your doctor might have said something. My doctor tells me non-diabetics are supposed to be around 100, and diabetics are supposed to be around 70. I take a very low dose of a statin--10 mg. at bedtime. Good work on the rest of the numbers! LDL they said in March couldn't be measured and now it comes in at 135. the HDL was 31 and now it is 48. total cholesterol was 486 and now it is 236. my tryglirides was 1400 and now 244. all the other stuff showed normal, but it did say that my thyroid function levels are low. it said they will recheck it in 90 days. now my wife takes thyroids meds and I think it is the lazy kind. I actually know nothing about our thyroid except it is important for life. so what does this news maybe mean? where exactly is our thyroid? plus how does it make one feel if it isn't working as it should? I suppose I could go look on the net and read all I would ever wish to know about the thyroid, but I believe those most who have a problem with it and how it makes them feel. the rest of my results pleased the saw bones. now I have to maintain the lower readings and not allow them to get out of control again. Guest guest
Good point, Harry, about Mark's ratio. Not sure if it's more important for this ratio to be under 3 to 1, or for the ldl to be 70 or so. Guest guest
Well my fine Sir Harry Sir! the saw bones thinks they should go even lower. he says my HDL nees to be around 60, the LDL under 100, like maybe 80, then my total cholesterol around 150 and my triglycerides under 180. now from everything I have read on the net, it tells me he isn't being fair at all! he is probably going by some text book that has not a clue. maybe was wrote by the drug companies who make piles of extra cash on suckers who believe they should get down this low and take more costly meds to do so. however what I read is the pills isn't going to bring these numbers down any lower and the drug lards know this. only eating right and exercise will do a much better job of getting the numbers where they should be and for a whole lot less money out of pocket for pills that aren't working on your health, but they do work to make lots of purses and wallets very fat! this is why I always tell my saw bone friend who I call my MD, I will not take cholesterol meds of any kind! not going to take any meds for raising the HDL or to lower the triglycerides! that is all in my opinion a waste of good money thrown away. however, he like others still clame to say and make us believe that those pills the drug companies are pushing will lower our numbers to a safe range and make us live longer. then in real small print that only some one with grate site can read, it says do eat a diet high in fresh veggies, fruit and do get at least 30 minutes of some type of exercise a day. then it will say in just the same small print to do cut down on sugar pop, caffeine and fats. A buddy of mine says it is all the doctor's and drug companies that are in bed together who are killing us and not the disease it self. then I can see there side of it though. if they didn't push pills and talked less about making better eating choices they would all be with out a job. I heard on the radio the other day that unemployment in this country would go away if we could put half of the doctor's and lawyers out of business. seems like it could really work and even half of each may still be to many?? I believe Sir Harry, I will make you my doc and fire the other one! I dig your attitude much better. Re: the rest of my blood work numbers. Guest guest
Mark, I believe my doctor, whom I usually have very frank and useful conversations with, who tells me low hdl is genetic. We can do a few things, such as exercise, increase Omega 3 and Niacin intake, but in the end, it will remain below the normal number. My hdl runs in the mid 20s. As far as high ldl, well, again, we can thank our friendly diabetes condition for this one. Again, healthy living will help, but the thinking today is diabetics need to have ldl numbers around 70, and not the 100 range for non-diabetics. Don't be closed minded to all drugs. Don't take more than necessary, but also, take ones that will improve health while maintaining a healthy life style. Guest guest
the problem I got with most of the cholesterol and triglyceride meds is my co pay after my insurance pays there part. Guest guest
well before this post my pc went crazy for a moment. bad hair day I guess. anyway I was going to say it is the co pay of mine that is $250 for each kind of drug they wish to put me on and they never do lower the numbers that much at all for the cost you got to put out. I went in the doughnut hole way to fast when I did take them. just not enough money in the month to pay such as the cost these major drugs think they have to have. the doc office will give you some samples some times, but lots of olks also need samples as well and don't suppose we should be greedy? I've found that eating right, making better choices and exercise daily will do more for you then the drugs will for the most part. maybe the drugs and the life style together will do a fine job, but you got to be a rich man to pay for all the drugs they think you need now days. they say we don't qualify for extra help because our monthly income is to high, but I can't find the extra they say I got. can't figure out if it is the high cost of living? or is it the cost of high living? maybe we should live in a tent on the river and spend our extra cash on more drugs! Guest guest
Mark, I use one called something like, Zocor. It's a generic, and as with most of my other prescriptions, I get them at Costco and pay cash. The cost is less than $10 per 30-day prescription. Wal-Mart also has this program, and probably most other larger pharmacies. The thing I put through insurance is my insulins as well as an anti-seizure medication.
